We know, we know — it’s hard to discuss fall fashion when it’s JUST starting to look like spring! But visiting all the Fall 2013 previews has definitely tickled our interest in what we’ll be coveting come next season. And with the Fall runways still glimmering in our minds, it’s nice to see how the designer trends will be translated to retail stores as well. Each season, Gap’s press previews are a treat for that reason. The retail chain always does a stellar job in incorporating current trends while still staying true to their signature minimalist, All-American aesthetic. But this season, a few key pieces stood out for me that I will literally be counting down the months, days, and even hours to have them in my possession.
Walking through the Fall 2013 collection, presented in a light and airy loft space in the Meatpacking District, jolts of color peeked out from racks of the Gap’s usual suspects: denim, outerwear, and versatile separates. But it was the display of accessories, rising up in the back of the room like a vibrant altar, that I felt myself being uncontrollably pulled toward (above). One usually doesn’t associate neon colors and fresh bold hues with fall but why not?! There’s no rule in the unwritten Fashion Bible that says otherwise. Bright pinks and yellows mixed seamlessly with the more traditional palette of navy, brown and red. But it was the bucket tote in a dazzling shade of cobalt that caused me to whip out my phone and type a memo to myself to remember the late summer roll out.
I’ve been wearing black coats since far before I was a New Yorker. When choosing my Fashion Week wardrobe last season I became a little disturbed by how dark and foreboding all my outerwear has become. So I made a belated New Year’s resolution to go a little more light hearted when coat weather season comes around again. Without veering too far out of my comfort zone, I settled on camel as a smart and versatile choice. True to form, Gap’s lineup of outerwear did not disappoint and lo and behold! This menswear-inspired, wool camel coat is just what I need to break me out of my black on black blahs. I loved the silhouette, the little details like the pocket and peek of pink and the collar, and the asymmetrical buttons are pretty much everything. I have to keep telling myself that I’m glad the heavy coat-wearing months are (mostly) behind us.
Chances are the first thing you ever wore from the Gap when you were 10 years old was probably made from denim. As the retailer’s bread and butter, the denim collection has spanned every major trend, fit, cut and wash that has probably ever been created. So it was no surprise when their round up of denim for fall included a veritable rainbow of earthy and jewel-toned colors, signature royal blues and plenty of sumptuously coated denim. Even if I had a few pairs I would probably never run out of options of what to wear with them, not just for one season, but for the entire rest of the year! Needless to say, I set a separate alarm on my phone just for the denim roll out alone.
So there you have it: among a stellar Gap Fall 2013 preview, these three particulars had me skipping down 15th Street in the warm sunshine with visions of fall leaves and chilly winds dancing through my head!
