Male Box: Spring Flowers & Early May Flowers

April 15, 2013 • Magazine, Male Box

Global warming may have made March come in like a lamb and go out like a lion (rather than the other way around), but April is already living up to its soggy reputation. Faced with a month of bad hair days, what is any self-respecting fashionista to do? Bravely face the weather with the latest fashion!

Staying dry may mean lumpy old trench coats and $3 umbrellas to some people, but fashion types see wet weather as an even better opportunity to stand out from a temporarily homogenized crowd. Just like the first bright hyacinths that break through the brown dirt, you’ll cut through a sea of khaki coats in Burberry Prorsum’s fushia and pomegranate silk double breasted trench coat. The color blocking may be subtle, but the overall effect is not.

If you really want to stop traffic then go for red – bright red like the Dutch tulips just starting to pop up around New York City parks. Nobody does red better than Valentino and this season’s bow backed trench coat is sure to command everyone’s attention. The classic double breasted trench goes girly with a slightly flared shape and an oh-so feminine bow at the waist. Spring wouldn’t be spring without floral prints and this season RED Valentino offers a floral print faille trench coat. The watercolor flowers brighten the crisp shape and will bring a smile to your face on any dreary day. Whether you are walking toward them or away, you’ll be sure to brighten the day of everyone whose path you cross in either of these coats.

In Victorian times, women carried nosegays to ward off the various smells of the city. Perfumed handkerchiefs served the same purpose. These days you rarely see women carrying fresh flowers but why not pay homage to the tradition with a floral bag – fragrance optional? RED Valentino offers several floral totes this season, but the blue, green, and pink meadow print is perhaps the most fresh. Truly a breath of fresh air on any gray April day, this bag will surely bring a smile to your face.

If all the bows and full skirts seem much too girly for you, have no fear. Opening Ceremony is looking out for all you tough fashion chicks out there. The dark abstract floral print on their classic biker jacket takes just enough of the edge off this normally hard-edged silhouette. Jimmy Choo toughens up floral by putting his bright take on the print on genuine python and adding biker chains. Even the most hardcore fashion chick has to admit that this bag has some spring appeal.

I wrote this column on a rainy New York day to lift my spirits and I hope it has the same effect on you whatever the weather is wherever you are. Spring is a time of hope and change. Miriam Van Hirtum said “Spring is the only revolutionary whose revolution has succeeded.” Why not stage your very own fashion revolution and shake things up a bit?
