Pret Reportuer: The New Age of Neon

April 22, 2013 • Magazine, Pret Reporteur

We try to block out the days when it was considered awesome to wear glow-in-the-dark pants and matching shoes. We almost totally forgot when it was considered the height of cool to have a day-glow bra illuminating beneath white cotton tees. Yes, these less than fashionable moments of our past were almost lost in time, until neon became in-style again. That’s when all these embarrassing outfits came fluttering back into our minds. So when some of our favorite designers took to the neon craze, we almost screamed in frustration. However, careful styling consideration has helped us break the new neon code. No, we don’t have to relive nightmares of the 80s and 90s fashion by succumbing to the color craze. The secret to mastering this summer trend is to add mere pops of it into our looks.

1. Watch: Marc by Marc Jacobs Henry Skeleton Leather Watch, $200

A watch is by far the most functional accessory you can invest in, so you might as well make it fun and trendy. Adding a popping neon color to your timekeeper will draw attention to an unexpected area. If you’re really digging the neon craziness, you can even paint your nails to match your watch for an extra added effect.

2. Belt: Ralph Lauren Crescent O-Ring Tri-Strap Belt, $295

We present to you, the belt to top all belts! Ralph Lauren has seriously outdone himself with this asymmetrical waist-cincher. Top this colorful belt over a simple maxi or tee, and you’re instantly in-vogue!

3. Shoes: Brian Atwood Stellah Patent- Leather Strappy Sandals, $995

We are always looking for a reason for a new pair of kicks – don’t even try to deny that! So when neon Brian Atwood heels present themselves, you must obey! The biggest pro of these heels are their versatility. Have them peek under long denim pants or add a pop of color to an all-white ensemble, either option is totally okay in our book.

4. Necklace: Neon Aziza Necklace by Ek Thongspraser X Natasha Goldberg, $370

Summer heat can be brutal, so sometimes we like to skimp over silky looks for more comfortable cotton tees. It’s not a crime, it’s totally human. Still, nothing makes us look more fashionably slack than throwing on a cotton tee or dress, and calling it a chic outfit. But when you throw on a chandelier highlight-color necklace on top, you’re untouchable! True, this takes a little fashion bravery to tackle this accessory, but what’s life without a little risk?

5. Dress: Chalayan Speed Flare Printed Dress, $1660

Wait a minute! You can wear a neon dress without looking like you stepped out of a time machine?! Well, if your frock happens to incorporate the neon color with mix medias of abstract prints, then yes!  There’s only one word that could describe this summer dress: perfection.

6. Clutch: Proenza Schouler PS1 Python Pochette, $1,735

If you’re still not on-board the neon look, a handbag is the accessory you need. It’s a noncommittal way slowly seep into the trend. And a Proenza Schouler PS1 is definitely the classy way to go.
