Is it just me or was there a 70s theme going on at the Council of Fashion Designers Awards this year? Blinked and you might have missed it, but there was definitely something in the air when it came to looks from the disco and boho chic decade. Perhaps it’s the newest trend for the oncoming season.
The Council of Fashion Designer Awards are becoming an annual hoopla when it comes to fashion — with some of the biggest names in the fashion industry on hand to dole out much deserved awards to the American fashion community by way of Vogue and the Council of Fashion Designers in America. This year, while the ceremony seemed more on the toned-down side, the high-fashion was still in full effect on models and celebs like Karolina Kurkova, Jessica Chastain and even Hilary Rodham Clinton, who honored her go-to designer – Oscar de la Renta. Other winners included Thom Browne, the much talked about Proenza Schouler brand, 3.1 Phillip Lim for accessories, and Vera Wang, among others. For added luxury, the event was underwritten by Swarovski.
The best dressed, pulling out all the stops in the 70s trend category, included names like Kerry Washington, Rooney Mara, Miranda Kerr and more. They wore bright colors like gold and turquoise, lots of white looks, and many of the stars wore fringe (Olivia Palermo in Dennis Basso) and cutouts (Karlie Kloss, Ashley Madekwe in Cushnie et Ochs) in their own version of modern/70s style. Let’s see what they wore and how they played up this 70s trend right.
Gold lame always does the trick.
Sofia Vergara is always a showstopper. What I found interesting is that she picked a form fitting gown in GREEN!! And it looks fantastic.
This dress is not so minimalist by Calvin Klein standards. And it looks perfect for Rooney Mara. Albeit too dressed down for this event.
Karlie Kloss may just be the only person in the world that can pull off the tight fitting cut outs of Cushnie et Ochs.
There’s something about this dress by Proenza Schouler that’s so urban, and yet fits with this whole 70s vibe that a lot of the designers went for with their pieces worn at the CFDA Awards.
More cutouts, this time by Alexander Wang.
More flashy silver to add to Nicole Richie’s gold. Karolina Kurkova wears a silver Michael Kors jumpsuit.
More flash — she looks like she has fireworks on her shirt. This is so 70s I can’t stand it!!
Hilary Rhoda is one of the best dressed of the evening in this draping black and white beauty by Helmut Lang.
Hailee Steinfeld makes crop tops look so chic! I love how well she wears prints and a high waist skirt, showing off just a hint of skin, but making the whole thing age appropriate.
Fringe, fringe, and more fringe! I’m surprised Dennis Basso didn’t use fur!
The only girl we saw wearing Jason Wu this evening…and didn’t she look ever so lovely in canary yellow?
I’m not sure why, but I kind of love this. Something about the mix of sheer and print is a bit weird, but it works on her frame, and it looks truly 70s!
Yes, supermodels CAN wear big designers (and they do.) There weren’t too many Oscar de la Renta gowns on the red carpet (except Hilary Rodham Clinton, of course) and Linda Evangelista is one in a million.
Not sure why Jessica Chastain chose to go simple at this event and overboard at others. This dress is nice, but nothing special and I expected a little more from Riccardo Tisci since he is so great.
Turquoise always does the trick and I’m so glad she paired this with white shoes.
Remember when she wore that sparkly Elie Saab jumpsuit? Yes, Rose Byrne knows how to do disco and she does it well!
