Celebrity Style: Unique Black and White Combos For Work and Play

June 10, 2013 • Celebrity Style, Magazine

Who knew black and white would be a spring trend once again? Well, it’s back and bigger than ever for Spring 2013, showing up in stripes, color block, and menswearish pieces paired with both colors. The great thing about black and white is it’s pretty versatile. You can wear it casually, dress it up, or simply choose a bold accessory or statement shoes to add a pop of vibrant color. You can also transition from day to night and work to play, using some key steps.

Celebrities, too, know how to wear their black and white, choosing to go for striking statement prints and bold patterns and combinations more so than the rest of us. Everyone from Octavia Spencer to Anna Kendrick to Gwen Stefani have turned up in the (not so) daunting trend.

Here are four fashionistas that are playing up the black and white trend just right and how you can follow their example, or be inspired to swap in a few things for work.

Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie has a glamorous but boho chic, downtown LA vibe to her clothes and typically keeps it ultra-casual mixing highs and lows. So I was especially surprised to see her in a menswearish white J. Brand vest and trousers with Saint Laurent cap toe pumps. Of course, she dressed down the look with a casual black bustier type piece underneath.

For Work: Swap in a black short sleeve, quarter length sleeve, or long sleeve shirt for the bra.

Olivia Palermo

Fashionista Olivia Palermo paired her cuffed black blazer with a black and white printed button down and Milly for Banana Republic Collection shorts with an elephant pattern. The black Oxfords are sweet and shiny, but the elephant shorts are great for play, not work.

For Work: Trade the shorts for another Milly for Banana Republic collection piece, a Banana Republic Milly Collection Feathers Printed Skirt still patterned and just as cute as the elephant shorts.

Kourtney Kardashian

Never one to say no to experimentation! Kourtney Kardashian wears a white Skaist Taylor short suit with black piping over a black and white striped shirt. Although I’m not surprised, I’m wondering if she came up with this herself. It kind of works and kind of doesn’t.

For Work: Swap the white tee for something a little more monochromatic and maybe wear black tights with the ensemble.

Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale rocked a silk Parker outfit with a loud print and a black cami underneath. Could you rock a black and white print statement suit like she has?

For Work: Calm down the loud pattern by breaking it up. Don’t wear the entire ensemble, just wear the blazer with a black top and solid colored pants.
