Founder of Elite Modeling Agency, John Casablancas, died Saturday in Rio de Janeiro after a battle with cancer. He was 70. Casablanca founded Elite Modeling Agency in Paris back in 1972 and revamped the modeling industry with his more liberal approach. Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Iman, Heidi Klum and Gisele Bundchen are just a few of the models he helped catapult into the modeling world.
While Casablancas left Elite in 2000, the agency was raking in $100 million annually in model bookings.
He once said in a Modelinia interview, “Fashion is not about a Disney-like type of catalogish model. Fashion is about really exciting girls that have something to say, that express something.”
