Gap Returns to Television Advertising
Gap is now airing television ads for the first time in four years. The biggest U.S. specialty-apparel retailer, which has had a recent turnaround, has made two videos featuring musicians performing songs their fathers made famous. Alexa Ray Joel sings Billy Joel’s “Just The Way You Are” and plays the piano, while Dhani Harrison sings and plays “For You Blue” on guitar. The ads promote Gap’s “Back to Blue” fall denim campaign. The videos were shot in single takes and feature minimal editing, unlike the retailer’s past commercials. Sales at Gap stores have doing well for six straight quarters.
Bloomingdale’s Ends Next-Day Returns
Uh oh, returning an outfit the next day is getting more difficult. In addition to tagging merchandise to prevent theft, Bloomingdale’s is now keeping garments tagged after they’re purchased. Three-inch black plastic devices are attached to visible places and once customers remove the tag, they can’t return the garment. The tags can’t be reattached and are difficult to hide when the item is worn. Bloomingdale’s is preventing “wardrobing,” or the act of buying clothes and wearing them once before returning them. The National Retail Federation estimates this costs the industry around $8.8 billion each year. We want to know- do you think this is fair?
Harrods Exec will be Saks President
Hudson’s Bay Co. has announced that Harrods executive Marigay McKee will become president of Saks Inc. This change is the result of the deal Hudson’s Bay made to acquire Saks. In addition, chairman and CEO Stephen Sadove and president and chief merchant Ronald Frasch will leave company once the acquisition takes place. The $2.4-billion deal was announced in July.
