One of the reasons why the Alice+ Olivia presentation is always a such a chaotic scene is that fans of the fun and bubbly brand know that designer Stacey Bendet will always tell a story with her collections. Everything from the props to the music to the cocktails being served are all an integral part of bringing her pieces to life. Last Fall’s Romanov-esque, baby grand piano set up was definitely going to be hard to top. And while Bendet served up her usual sumptuous array of party dresses and flirty frocks, the collection as a whole did feel a little fashion lite.
Bendet’s said that the concept behind this season’s look was “preppy meets pretty”, which set the stage for the more sporty pieces likes a polo paired with a ballgown skirt, and a cropped beaded jacket with ripped up jeans. Those looks were fine, with the help of Bendet’s masterful styling, and the added help of her whimsical bags and shoes. But the “preppy” didn’t really shine through as much as the “pretty” which is ultimately, what Bendet does best. For me, the standout looks were the cocktail dresses and gowns swathed in vintage lace, the over-sized tuxedo jackets and the crystal-embellished bustiers. I love the drama, the romance, and the femme fatale feel of her designs and call me predictable, but that’s what I want to see most of from A + O. Luckily, Fall is coming up again and fabrics, textures, and luxe layering is (IMHO) where Bendet truly shines.
