Spring 2014 fashions may have just hit the runway, but the truth sets in among the fashion forward just as the first cool breezes of fall roll in. The more compulsive among us may have converted our closets over Labor Day to feature the pre-fall collections we shopped in July, but now that all hope of an Indian summer has passed, the rest of you have to catch up. Take a cue from the trees as the leaves change colors; it’s time to put away your summer whites and switch to the warmer Autumn tones, if not weights, in your wardrobe. Here are four fall items you can have in your closet by next weekend.
One quick and easy way to change up your look is to introduce a little suede into your daily outfit. If the nude pump has been your go-to shoe all summer, why not sport a pair of Via Spiga’s Bleu Booties in dark taupe? The neutral color compliments any outfit and the strappy inset checks off the “must have” cutout bootie trend for fall.
The cognac suede hobo bag from Elizabeth and James sends a clear message to everyone you might encounter that you have stepped up your fashion game for fall. The slouchy silhouette is the perfect contrast to the more structured bags you may have carried all summer. The warm cognac color is the perfect transition towards the shades of camel that you’ll be featuring further into the fall season.
No doubt you already have the perfect suede pencil skirt in your closet or on call from cold storage, if you’re obsessive about these things. But if your grail quest continues then consider Nanette Lepore’s camel suede and black leather illusion skirt. The suede panel registers as a slimmer line from the front. Paired with the sheerest black Fogal hose – the kind you need cotton gloves to don, even if your manicure is flawless – the line will be long and equally slimmer viewed from the sides or the back.
Finally, the fourth suede item you need this fall is a little jacket. Fans of my column were probably expecting me to proffer a full length suede Trench coat, but I’ll save that for later on in the season. Ralph Lauren’s zip front jacket is the ideal layering piece for the fall. The collar is tall enough to serve as an impromptu neck warmer. Simply zip up the jacket fully should the air turn chilly during the day or after the sun sets. Zip down the vertical hand warmer pockets and you won’t have to wring your hands to starve off the chill. No need to overstuff your hobo bag with a scarf and gloves “just in case”.
Regardless of how you feel about the end of summer, embrace the season – and the fall collections. We have precious few days to sport suede before the weather turns wet and damp. Four quick additions to your wardrobe and you’ll be ready for whatever the fall breezes bring!
