The world is buzzing with the many surprises that happened at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, the least of which were in the fashion category.

Neil Patrick Harris wowed the crowd with funny monologues Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and musical numbers in the middle of the program. Nominees like Merritt Weaver were so shocked at their wins they could barely get two words out…culminating in the best speech of all time! (You’ll have to re-watch Weaver’s speech to understand what I’m talking about.)

Surprises reigned supreme on the program and the fashion category had its share. From Claire Danes‘ cleavage baring Armani to Michelle Dockery‘s color block, here are some of our favorites.

Emerald Green and Other Jewel Tones

While canary and mustard yellow were the go-to colors of last year’s Emmy Awards, it was emerald green that caught us by surprise, showing up on Mayim Bialik, Anna Chlumsky, and Sarah Hyland. These and other jewel tones (including the roaring red shown above) are the apple of our eye at this year’s awards.

Besides the black and white blocking and graphic prints, is anyone noticing the new sheer trend where solid bodysuits or short skirts on a gown have a sheer overlay that’s both stylish and sexy?

Here are some other gowns that stood out for those reasons and many more:

The Gowns That Stood Out

Embellishments, crazy patterns, goth looks and more.  These girls made the biggest statements on the red carpet at this year’s Emmy Awards with gowns that took our breath away, for better or worse.

Worst Dressed

But of course, no red carpet list is complete without some entries for worst dressed. You may not agree with all (some loved Claire Danes’ Armani Prive but I thought it only made her look worse in the cleavage area) but we can all agree that these looks made us gasp in disapproval (hello Zosia Mamet in Honor Resort!) Things I also hate: too much fabric at the bottom of Vera Farminga’s dress and Amanda Peet’s gothic nightmare.
