Pierre Cardin Returns to the Runway
Last night, Pierre Cardin held an off-the-calendar show in Paris, ignoring the official Paris couture week calendar. This was the 91-year-old designer’s first high-fashion runway show since 1996. The event also marked the 60th anniversary of Cardin’s first fashion show under his own name. “I staged fashion shows for 60 years of my life, and now I want to stand on my own, to show when I feel like it. I no longer want to have any obligations,” Cardin said after his show at his restaurant Maxim’s. The couturier has shown lineups for women and men under the label Maxim’s de Paris. Similar to past collections, the show was inspired by Cardin’s lifelong love of geometry, futurism, and freedom of movement. Perched in the front row, the beloved designer kept up commentary throughout the 40-minute show and encouraged the models to lift their arms and twirl.
Karl Lagerfeld Opening London Flagship
Karl Lagerfeld will open his biggest European store to date in London. Opening in March, the flagship will be located at 145-147 Regent Street. The Karl Lagerfeld concept store will offer women’s ready to wear and accessories, including handbags, eyewear, jewelry, and shoes, as well as menswear. The space’s décor will be black-and-white and will feature mirrors and walls of light. There will be iPad minis integrated into display racks so shoppers can view the collection online, watch videos, take photos, and even leave a note for Lagerfeld. Fitting rooms will be outfitted with photo booths allowing customers to snap their looks and apply filters, before sharing them on social media. The boutique is the first of several international Lagerfeld stores opening over the next five years.
Alexa Chung Fronts Longchamp
Alexa Chung is the face of Longchamp’s spring/summer 2014 campaign. The “it” girl was tapped by the French company to mark the 20th anniversary of the popular Le Pliage bag. The images show Chung vacationing in Saint-Tropez and will debut in the February issues of fashion magazines. Max Vadukul shot the campaign, Alexis Roche was the stylist, and Jean-François Julien created a short film that will debut during New York Fashion Week on social media. Alexa will also star in Longchamp’s autumn/winter 2014 campaign. Past muses for the brand include Coco Rocha and Kate Moss.
