If you’re snuggled into a warm cashmere sweater as you read this, you’ve probably noticed that winter is officially here. And so far, it’s a cold one! Once the temps drop below freezing, it’s our invitation to turn outerwear into an essential part of our everyday outfits. While it would be very easy to add yet another black coat to the endless rotation, why not branch out into a couple new trends that graced the Fall/Winter 2013 runways: color (gasp!) and over-sized silhouettes (double gasp!). We think these jewel-toned jackets are a breath of fresh air to the never ending army of blah we see on our daily commutes. Whether they’re a cheap thrill you can wear when you’re feeling fancy, or an investment piece that you can pass down for generations, these candy-colored coats will help to make the winter that much sweeter!

Having the Winter Blues never looked so chic! Trend setter Marc Jacobs chose a deep & furry blue for his statement coat color in Fall 2013, and we love it as much as Cookie Monster loves chocolate chips. The over-sized silhouette is a perfect modern contrast to the more vintage elements of wide lapels and a longer length. The skinny belt is also a genius idea, which can be easily added to our equally sapphire version from OASAP with a much more wallet-friendly price tag.

How anyone can say no to fuchsia in the winter is just head scratching. It’s fun, it’s vibrant, and it’s definitely head turning among the drizzle, slush and sleet of those long winter days. Milly is always adept at adding a bright and punchy statement to their cold weather collections. Their hot pink parka with a moto shape and thick black zipper would cheer anyone up on a blustery day, as would our stand out, hands down gorgeous Silk Coccon Coat from Burberry Prorsum. Remember that investment piece we spoke of before? Sure, it may take up an entire paycheck but think of the all the parties over the years you’ll surely be the envy of.

For anyone who may need a break from black but not quite ready for the hot pink team yet, can find a perfectly suitable transition with camel. menswear-inspired was the name of the game on Yigal Azrouel‘s Fall 2013 runway, with a long, boxy shape that The Rat Pack would have been proud of. Tailored to a tee, yet still undeniably feminine, these wool coats are true the perfect marriage of comfort and style. Theory clearly got the memo as well, since we can’t take our eyes off their camel-colored double-faced wool confection.

Sometimes the best solution for a cold, miserable day is to start a three alarm fire with your fashion. Few colors do this better than fire engine red. Designer Vivienne Tam often turns to her Southeast Asian roots for inspiration, and knows all too well the powers that lie in the color red. Besides channeling good luck and good fortune, having a little crimson wrapped around you is a surefire way to put some color in your cheeks and a smile on your face. We chose a boxier, double-breasted fit from OASAP to stay in step with our over-sized theme, perfect to go over chunky sweaters, boots, and pencil skirts. Have fun with your coats this season because, like or not, you’re going to be together for quite awhile!
