Chicagoans had the fantastic opportunity last week to meet designers Steven Alan and Claire Vivier at Steven Alan Chicago on December 5th. They were both in town to celebrate the launch of Clare Vivier for Steven Alan, co-hosted by Alaina and Danielle from The Every Girl blog. Guests enjoyed drinks and appetizers and complimentary monogramming with the purchase of a bag!
Women were clamoring to get their monograms and everyone enjoyed chatting with the designers. I was thrilled to meet Clare, and told her that I adored her fold over handbags, but have a problem deciding which leather is my favorite! This season I’m deciding between between the star print (which Clare is holding, above), the spotted hair calf or the metallic printed leather. Oh heck! I should just get them both! And that is the beauty of her bags, the clean lines, the choice of leathers, the quality construction and the (much welcome) lack of a logo! So there is room for your own clean monogram. She told me she started her line while working for French television, looking for a just-right bag for her laptop, so she made one herself! Her collection was in the Steven Alan showroom and now she is popular coast-to-coast. She lives in L.A. but was not detoured by our weather because she said she lived in the Midwest, and France and of course, New York. I asked her what was the best advice anyone ever gave her. “I think it was ‘Be anyone you want to be!’ My father and mother always told me I could do anything I wanted to do.” I’m glad she decided to design handbags!
I was also excited to meet Steven Alan! He was milling about the crowd and happy to talk to guests. His store at 1659 N. Damen Avenue opened just a few months ago and I asked him about the lines he carries, his own collection, and his showings at New York Fashion Week. He reminded me that he started as Steven Alan Showroom in New York and showcased emerging designers, like Clare Vivier. In 1999 he launched his own line of ready-to-wear that he carries in his stores along with other awesome lines like A.P.C, Ulla Johnson, and Lauren Moffat, to name only a few.
