Vintage: Sparkle Baby…

December 16, 2013 • Magazine, Vintage

Tis the season … to go full on glitz and glam! This is the time of year when a little sparkle never hurts – in fact it’s almost a fashion fail if you don’t find a way to sneak it in somewhere. The good thing about the holiday season is that all of the sequin that hides in your closet the other eleven months of year can come out without reservation! What’s not to love about a little shimmer in your work wear or a lot of sparkle at your holiday party?

Frankly I’m not exactly sure where the bold look of glitter and sequins started in history, but it definitely made regular appearances in the roaring twenties. Beading, sequins and lace were used in the construction of many evening and party dresses worn at underground prohibition parties or star studded events. It may have been done in a more intricate way in the early part of the century but it surely provided the glitz and glam synonymous with that era. In terms of “go big or go home”, the 70s and 80s didn’t disappoint when it came to show-stopping sparkle. The big chunky sequins seen on disco queens, glam rock bands and that particularly brave fashion innovator you had class with served up a bolder statement than its earlier counterpart. That didn’t make us love sequins any less!

Today much of that sparkle has evolved into sophisticated and elegant pieces that you can pair with some of your everyday wardrobe – even your favorite pair of jeans! Sparkle decks out everything from t-shirts to cardigans to ballet flats and of course evening wear. Though I’m partial to some year-round sequin surprises, now is the time for the more conservatve fashion lovers to bust out her shiny closet treasures. You know you’ve got a little sparkle in your closet – so don’t miss the season to let it loose!
