Bankruptcy got the best of Loehmann’s, closing its Chelsea location. However, out with the old and in with the new. The well known Barneys New York will be taking its place at the Chelsea hot spot. Barneys known mostly by its Madison Avenue location, the Chelsea location opened in 1923 and closed in 1997. Home to Loehmann’s and a Himalayan art museum, but many fashion big shots remember the location as Barneys, the New York Times reports.
Zac Posen said, “It was the first department store I ever went to.” Diane Von Furstenburg even gave her opinion on the relocation,“I think it’s the best idea. It’s so good. They should never have abandoned the Chelsea store, and this will bring them good luck because they’re going back to their DNA.” Another prestige fashion name George Malkemus, the president of Manolo Blahnik told the Times he is “over the moon! It was the sexiest place to shop.”
At the Madison Avenue opening party back in 1993, famous faces from Bianca Jagger and Calvin Klein were in attendance, with Barry White singing for the guests. Many will be checking their mailboxes frequently hoping for an invite to the reincarnation of Barneys Chelsea location.
