Well here it is. After all the brouhaha over the 2012 London Olympics ‘not made in America’ opening ceremony uniform, this one screams it! Yes, they have all of the required proud American elements – red, white, blue, stars, stripes, a bald eagle, a pizza, apple pie…OK, so I’m joking about the last few, but seriously? This is one busy uniform!
Ralph Lauren’s new Olympic opening ceremony uniform is frightfully busy, but has the Made in America label. So there’s that. I think the sweater resembles a tacky Christmas sweater. The kind your third grade teacher wore or you would score for that Annual Awful Holiday sweater party. Carol thinks it looks like an odd take on a NASCAR uniform, you know, if NASCAR went preppy (that would be odd, no?). The hat is just the icing on the overdone cake.
I keep hearing Tim Gunn’s voice say “edit, edit, edit.” I wonder what he thinks of this. Either way, the trouble is from far away, nobody is going to know this is Team USA. There is not one clear element or statement. Just a mass of red, white and blue and we are not the only country to wear those colors.
Hey, I’m proud to be an American, but I wouldn’t be proud to wear this uniform. What do you think? We would love to hear your thoughts.
Update: I just saw a photo of the uniform’s matching pea coat and I have to admit, I rather like it. Also just read the article U.S. Olympic Outfits Worthy of Stares, if Not Medals in the NY Times. Funny stuff.
