I hate to say things like this, but I’m pretty sure Preen by Thornton Bregazzi was one of my favorite fashion shows I have ever seen. Ever. Just from walking in the National Theatre bright and early Saturday morning, the energy was immediately palpable. Everyone in the back of the house, from the models to the DJ, were ready for the show to start. Just from seeing the Storm Troopers hamming it up with models and photographers alike, it was the definition of what Fashion Week should qualify as a ‘show’.

Just as Rodarte did a few days earlier in New York, Preen focused their sights on “Star Wars” as a theme of the Autumn/Winter 2014 ready-to-wear collection, as well as the movie “Annie Hall”. “We started by looking at the 70s and focused on 1977,” says Thornton of their inspiration for A/W14. “A lot of cool films came out that year.”  Taking the classic tailoring and masculine/feminine roles from the Woody Allen classic and the bold imagery of Darth Vader, the AW14 collection was born.

Val Garland was the artist that created the look for Preen’s dark side. The main focus was a minimal face with a muddy taupe on the lids. “This is a beautiful, barely-there makeup with minimal product on the skin,” Garland explained. “1970s Star Wars meets rule Britannia.”

“Preen is so quirky so [the makeup] is never quite obvious,” Garland continued on the look. The face is prepped with Luna Cream Colour Base and MAC Pro Shine Mixing Medium mixed together. This is applied with a MAC Pro Duo Fibre Fan Brush over the high planes to highlight key areas.

The focus was really on the subtle mixture of browns on the eyelids. The eyes are covered with Breaking Ground Cream Colour Base all over the eyelid. Au Nature Cream Colour Base is then blended from the eye socket upwards towards the brows to diffuse the color, keeping most of the intense color concentrated in the crease. Garland explained that she also used shade Onature as the cream base for some of the girls. The eyes are then finished with NC15/NW20 MAC Pro Chromagraphic Pencil on the waterline to open and brighten the eyes. Brows round out the look by being brushed upwards and just groomed for a natural look. Lips are patted with Lip Conditioner Tube to hydrate and eliminate shine.

Garland was so animated in talking about how much she loved the line as well. “The clothes are spectacular! Wild color in that you’ve thrown on everything!” I would think that Luke Skywalker would agree.
