It’s been a long, cold, miserable winter but the end is now in sight. Spring in all of its floral and fragrant glory is hovering on the horizon and we cannot WAIT to push the bulky layers we’ve been living in to the back of our closets and bust out all the colors, shapes and textures to welcome in spring. One such shape that we can’t wait to get back into is the full skirt. Mini, midi, or knee-length, these fun, flirty and feminine skirts are a great way to shake off the cobwebs of covering up for so long and celebrate the freedom to once again show off some leg!

Full skirts were a popular trend on the Spring 2014 runways, many taking a modern spin on the vintage-inspired shape. One of the more contemporary takes on the trend involved unique prints across the swing of the skirt — from geometric to plaid to stripes — which accentuated the volume of the full shape. We love Diane von Furstenberg’s minimalist circles that covered her circle skirts, and vowed to find a similar eye-catching trend. We didn’t need to look too far before Tibi’s Lace Plaid Ombre skirt provided the fun in the plaid, the feminism in the lace, and the up to date trendiness with the cool ombre effect. A true triple threat!

If you would prefer color, rather than pattern, to make your full skirt a statement this spring, there’s nothing more vibrant and jovial than a tulip skirt of rose-red. Zac Posen’s panels and ruffles that rolled and cascaded over each other on his Spring 2014 runway made his skirts a walking work of art. We wanted to channel the same artfulness with a little bit of zest in choosing a day-to-day alternative. Again, Tibi hits the mark with their cheerfully crimson skirt; office appropriate in length and style, yet perfect for hitting the town with its silk-faille fabric and head-turning hue.

For some of us, our go-to style is right there in black and white. Literally, that is. Although spring fashion is a veritable bouquet busting with color, the old B + W standby never goes out of style for a reason: because it is timelessly chic. Black and white patterns and accents were one of the biggest full skirt trends, second only to florals. Tracy Reese decided to combine the two in her festive nod to tropical getaways in the Spring 2014 collection. We enjoyed the whimsy and girlishness of the bold, lily like pattern, but shot for something more subtle to bring out on the regular. Those vintage-loving mavens at Modcloth can always deliver a fun and whimsical piece for any occasion, and this Aweigh We Go Skirt is no exception for a fun little B + W nod to the nautical. And for the price matey, grab two!

While our scarlet skirts above can cause hearts to race and heads to turn, the other color we never get tired of in spring is blue. As tranquil and relaxing as the sunny skies we’ve waited so long to see, pale and pastel shades of blue are as essential to the season as a robin is to its egg. Alice + Olivia by Stacey Bendet made sure to include the heavenly hue in their delicate round up of feminine silhouettes for Spring 2014’s presentation, and we appreciated every pretty pleat and fresh fold in the collection. To get the obtain the best possible spring “blues”, we found a great alternative courtesy of Antonio Marras. Striped, flared, and just above the knee, this blue beauty can be tucked into a button down for meetings, paired with a shell for brunch, or folded into a fun little valise for that much-needed spring vacation. With a fresh season approaching, it’s time to start enjoying being a woman again with these ultra chic, ultra flattering, ultra fun full skirts!
