The crisp classic button-down seems to make the leap from the men’s closet to ours every few years. Or maybe it never really goes away. However, for Spring ’14 it’s what you pair the button-down with that makes it a little more alluring, chic and decidedly less preppy. Think less staid than wearing one with khakis and loafers and more unexpected pairing a cotton classic button-down with leather pants, or a leather motorcycle jacket. Or if you are a little more daring, wear it unbuttoned and tucked in (like on the Donna Karan and Altazarra Spring runways) or button just the top button and let the rest of your shirt fly open (I’d wear a tank underneath) like at Alexander Wang.
One of the ways I plan to wear the button-down is paired with a pleated midi skirt and a big belt slung low on the hips and pointy-toe stilettos. Or for total ease I will also try a shirtdress. The trick is to make sure you offset the masculinity of the shirt with ultra-feminine accessories like a statement necklace or earrings…just not both at the same time.See the Top Ten Summer 2016 Trends for Women Over 40
