Ever since a friend brought to my attention that my brows needed some cleaning up and shaping upon graduating college, I’ve been obsessed. Seriously. One of the best compliments you can give me is about my brows. Let’s just say I used to give circa 1982 Brooke Shields a run for her money. Just in the brow area.

Every evening, after washing my face, I grab my trusty Tweezerman or Sephora tweezers and stand in front of my magnifying mirror just looking for any stray brow hairs to pluck. Removing them gives me a feeling of satisfaction. When I feel they are getting out of hand, I go so my brow lady who I have been going to since I arrived in NYC 7 years ago. She has the ability to create beautiful brows from the two fuzzy caterpillars that if left to their own devices, would live on my forehead.

So when I received a PR pitch from someone representing Malynda Vigliotti (aka Boom Boom) owner of Boom Boom Brow Bar in NYC I thought, I want to meet her and see what she says about my brows. I know more natural, fuller brows are back on trend and learned Malynda is a champion of fuller, more natural brows. Considering ‘Boyish Brows’ were all over the Fall ’14 runways, I think it’s safe to assume they will be big (pun intended) come fall so maybe I should get a jump start?

A bit about Malynda “Boom Boom” Vigliotti in her own words, she’s obsessed with brows and sees no reason why everyone shouldn’t have thick, gorgeous eyebrows. Over 100,000 patrons have been served at Boom Boom Brow Bar in NYC  to date. Boom Boom knows there’s no such thing as natural beauty, but she does believe a perfectly done brow is an instant eyelift – no Botox necessary! She makes waxing fun and affordable for everyone, just walk-in, no appointment needed! Read on…

So a couple of weeks ago I went to the West Village salon which thankfully was right across the street from the subway. The Boom Boom Brow Bar is an adorable, clean, boudoir inspired space that has been open for about 6 years and I immediately spotted Malynda. No picture necessary. She simply oozes she is the top banana.

I was totally nervous and expecting her to trash my brows, but she didn’t. In fact she told me I didn’t need “Brow Rehab” as badly as most. Phew. I was asked to fill out a consultation card asking questions about products I’m using and any treatments I may have had recently that would adversely effect waxing or leave redness.

Since my brows were in pretty good shape, but as she told me over-shaped, Boom Boom just used a brow tint on me which is a vegetable dye that lasts 3-4 weeks and just fades out. I was rather surprised since my brows are pretty dark as it is, but I liked the effect. She then used a little bit of this pretty violet colored wax called Flash Wax between my brows to clean that area up a bit (God forbid I have a uni-brow!). Since I tend to get red from waxing (but not this wax) she used a little Bacitracin on the area just waxed.

Boom Boom then gave me my own personal rehab program. She asked me to not touch my brows for 30 days and then come back. Now, to me that’s the equivalent of asking a chocoholic to not eat chocolate! She also told me to use her Boom Boom Brow Job Growth Serum which she described as ‘like Latisse for the brows.’ By not touching my brows for 30 days and allowing them to grow out all of my brow hair will be on the same growth cycle and she can really see what’s going on. “Brows are all about proportion” she told me. Meanwhile, I was quaking in my boots. What the hell am I going to look like in 30 days? What if people notice I have stray brows? I’ll die! Boom Boom then produced a Boom Boom Push-up Brow Highlighting Pencil and told e to use it to cover the stragglers that literally drive me insane. It’s rather brilliant actually. It also works as a highlighter.

My brows before, during and after my appointment.

“The Boom Boom Brow Bar is all about three things,” said Boom Boom. “One, accessibility. We don’t take appointments because it’s New York and everybody is on their own schedule. They are either late or something else comes up. So come in when you want.” What’s number two? “Affordability. Everything we do is under $50.” Finally, what’s number three? “Cleanliness. We don’t double dip.” Seinfeld would be proud.

So how am I doing? It’s been two weeks and so far I have resisted the urge to break out the tweezers, but it has been a challenge. On the flip side, my evening bedtime routine/time has been greatly reduced! I have a couple more weeks before I can go back for my game plan to fuller brows.

There is even better news for those living in or visiting NYC, but not near the West Village. Boom Boom Brow Bar will be opening a few more locations within some Ricky’s stores in the city. Stay tuned.

Boom Boom Push-up Brow Highlighting Pencil, $18.99

Boom Boom Push-Up brow highlighting pencil tricks out eyes like a pro make-up artist. Growing out brows and want to blend strays? An obsessive tweezer totally freaked out by the thought of the re-growth phase? Looking for lift to make eyes look clear and alive? Want to look younger by accentuating the brow bone and highlighting eyes?  Even if you just want to add a little sparkle to dance the night away, the double sided Push-Up is the answer. Follow the tips in this video to bring out your inner lift.

  1. Use the matte concealer side on the brow bone to create the illusion of lift and to camouflage stragglers that grow between waxing services.
  2. Dab the sparkle side on the inside corner of the eye for a dash of pop, to look bright eyed and bushy tailed – see ya later dark circles!
  3. Line the lower inside of the eye with the matte side to make eyes look awake and happy – they are the windows to the soul, let the world know you’re ready to roll!

According to Malynda here are the Top 5 Worst Brow Mistakes;

  • Over Plucking – brows that are too thin, have gaps, are too short or start too far from the center of the nose. Put the tweezers down and see a professional.
  • Bleached Out Brows – don’t let the sun or haircolor bleach/lift brow color, brows disappear. Keep them bold by wearing sunscreen, tinting or filling in with brow powder.
  • Constant Picking – hair gets on different growth cycles and critical eyes tend to be obsessive and do damage to shape/density. Get a monthly shaping and be done with it.
  • Loosing the Arch – the best brows have a slight arch, if holding a brush parallel to the outside edge of the colored part of the eye (the iris), where the brush meets the brow is where the highest part of the arch should be.   Loose it and it will take time to recover.
  • Using a Pencil – REALLY?  Those days are over (thank god!), looks terrible – STOP! Mistakes will be made, so try Brow Job to help them grow back in 4-6 weeks.
