Alexander McQueen was not the type of person to hang around the discount mall alongside a Riverside County freeway, that is exactly where his label opened its first U.S. outlet store at Desert Hills Premium Outlets. Along with McQueen, labels such as: Helmut Lang, Belstaff, Carolina Herrera, Dolce & Gabbana have been taking their name to outlets. However, the outlet stores that brands once used to get rid of their out of season merchandise are now challenging full priced shopping centers in the process. Since 2006, only one new regional mall has opened while 40 outlet centers have emerged in the United States. Outlet malls are in the best position right now to cut in on full priced shopping centers. Just this year, twelve outlet malls totaling 4.2 million square feet are to open in the U.S. and Canada.
