Runway To Real Way: No Gray Area Here! Black And White Trends for Spring 2014

May 5, 2014 • Magazine, Runway To Real Way

This is it, Chicago! Under the weary shroud of the coldest winter we’ve had on record, spring buds are finally starting to peek up above ground. And while the above freezing temps may have you running to your nearest retailer to snatch up all the pastels you can carry, don’t forget on of the cardinal rules of spring fashion: any color combo is fair game. Including, of course, no color at all. Black and white is arguably the only color combination that remains effortlessly chic throughout each of the four seasons. For spring, black and white is a bold, dynamic pick for when layers begin to come off and hemlines start to rise. Invest in a new set of fresh, b + w pieces that will make you as happy this season as the reappearance of the sun!

Before we start stripping down to our skivvies, we have to remember that this is still spring in Chicago, which can amount to any given weather in a 50 degree radius. For those chillier days, it’s definitely still wise to have a warm (albeit stylish) spring jacket. But unlike their bulkier, frumpier winter coat cousins, spring jackets can be integral parts of a fashion forward ensemble. For DKNY’s Spring 2014 runway, the brand showcased tons of graphic options that were youthful while still  sophisticated. We fell particularly hard for this b + w blazer, which we repurposed into a sleek, budget-friendly biker jacket by River Island.

One of the best designers of the past ten years to fully understand femininity is Christian Siriano. Siriano’s shapes and silhouettes are always crafted into ultra-flattering and super flirty shapes for all sized of women to enjoy. For spring 2014, we loved his ladylike A-line skirts with leg-lengthening black and white stripes. Though the vertical lines were a great choice in Siriano’s set, we loved the way the pleats set off the horizontal stripes in striped mesh and ultra glam skirt by MRZ, resulting in the perfect combination of drama and demure.

What would spring be with a bountiful new crop of fresh new dresses? A black and white palette allows you to take full license on a punchy and bold print. Yigal Azrouel’s graphic sheaths channeled a Rorschach test in its contained but wild patterning. For a subdued yet sophisticated daytime look, we wanted to channel the same sense of symmetry. Donna Morgan’s similarly shaped sheath is perfect for work or play in it’s eye catching b + w print and will serve just as well under a structured blazer come fall.

One of the hottest shapes of the season has already become the tapered cuff trapeze trouser. With a voluminous shape on top leading into a more structured pant at the leg, the comfortable trend has become huge for concerts, festivals and general outdoor play once the weather turns warm. It’s also become a great way to sneak in a splashy print without looking too over-the-top. Stacey Bedet of Alice + Olivia turned her black and white printed pants into a perfectly pretty set, complete with a cropped blazer and silky shell. For a version that plays less by the rules, we loved the unfussy, rolled up nature of these completes steals by MKL Collective. The black and white prints are our fave, but with this price tag you can snag one in every color! Go bold this spring and celebrate the season with crisp, polished pieces in black and white!
