AmfAR Cannes Gala Goes Red
The amfAR benefit on May 22, widely considered the social highlight of the annual Cannes Film Festival in France, will stage a red-themed fashion show of gowns created for the occasion. After shining a spotlight on the colors black and gold in previous years, Carine Roitfeld, who is overseeing the runway show for the third time, said she wanted to dedicate the show to Monroe Red, which is also the symbol of the fight against AIDS. The theme will be translated into one-off evening looks from around 35 fashion houses, including Alexander McQueen (illustration above), Alexander Wang, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Roberto Cavalli, Chanel, Christian Dior, Christopher Kane, Fendi, Giorgio Armani, Givenchy and more designers.
Ralph Lauren Donates to London Cancer Hospital
The man who dresses the on-court staff at Wimbledon and whose stores large and small are spread across town has made a multimillion-dollar donation to the Royal Marsden Hospital, the biggest and most comprehensive cancer center in Europe. The Ralph Lauren Centre for Breast Cancer Research is set to open next year in the hospital’s main branch on the Fulham Road in Chelsea, just down the street from two of the designer’s stores. The new cancer-research center will span 6,383 square feet and take up an entire floor of the hospital. Its goal will be to help identify molecular differences between tumors in order to fine-tune and develop treatments, and to eliminate unnecessary and toxic therapies.
Dior Cruises Into … Brooklyn?
It’s not every day that passengers on New York City’s Water Taxis sip Ruinart Champagne. But that was the refreshment served this week to those traveling from Manhattan’s 34th Street ferry terminal to the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s Duggal Greenhouse to see Dior’s 2015 resort show. The event was more than a mere viewing of clothes. It was an Instagram-jamming branding extravaganza—the four letter logo emblazoned everything from the greeters’ nautical uniforms to the ferry seats—and a fashion-world happening. The crowd included Christian Louboutin, photographer Patrick Demarchelier and Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, who said they hadn’t attended another designer’s show in a decade.
