Last night I attended the press event for L’Oreal’s new virtual makeup app called Makeup Genius by L’Oréal Paris. Now hair and makeup programs are nothing new, but you typically need to upload a static picture of yourself so the hair never fits correctly and the makeup always looks cartoon-like.
With the Makeup Genius by L’Oréal Paris app you use your smartphone or iPad’s front-facing camera and apply L’Oreal products (of course) like lipsticks, eyeshadows, blushes and eyeliners in real time. That means when you move, smile or tilt your head, the applied makeup moves with you. It’s actually rather cool. I was able to road-test the app last night so be sure to check out my before and after pics below.
How does it work? The Makeup Genius app maps out 64 points on your face to identify your skin tone and features. When that part is completed you simply choose the products you would like to try on. For instance I tried a pink lip and a black cat-eye. It looked amazing. In fact, it’s very Judy Jetson (if you are old enough to remember, she would hold a made up face mask to talk on her video phone while she had no makeup on behind it).
The effect is not clownish (unless you pick a hideous color) and you get a true picture how the makeup will really look on you and the hairstyle and clothes you are rocking at the moment. It can also save you from a bad purchase at the drugstore which is a huge plus. Now if the app would only zap the makeup to your face perfectly applied – that would be totally genius! (I have no idea how to apply a cat-eye like the one I tested. At least not on both eyes!) No worries. I’m sure the next generation will have that ability. It’s coming. So it this new app. The Makeup Genius by L’Oréal Paris app will be available for download mid-June. Women and drag queens…rejoice!
