Depending on one’s lifestyle and general fashion sensibilities, the latest trend of wearing athletic gear and combining it with decidedly non-athletic clothes will make these pieces work for many more occasions than simply going to the gym.
Stylish track pants* may seem like an oxymoron, but there is definitely a way to rock them. Slouchier pants require a more fitted top, and stilettos or other strappy sandals are an excellent idea as well (even if they are flats, keep the shoes delicate in general). These Michael Kors track pants in navy linen would look perfect with a simple white tee, a long necklace or statement earrings, and some amazing shoes for a hot summer day. Ideally at least one of the accessories would be a bold color!
There are plenty of ways to pair sneakers with more luxe pieces, but our favorite is with skinny pants (cropped or not), an embellished tee, and a blazer. These snakeskin Adidas Basket Profi sneakers have a hidden wedge that looks sporty and is still ultra-flattering.
They are not just for game day anymore! Pairing a fitted jersey (the fitted part is important) with boyfriend jeans or skinny jeans and heels, along with other feminine accessories is very modern. And you don’t need to pick a team. This black and dark gray Under Armour jersey is a perfect option, and you can layer it with a tank or camisole for more coverage.
While not typically athletic wear per se, hoodies are usually associated with the gym. However, they can be more versatile – and the key to making a hoodie work is making the rest of the outfit much more glamorous. Using a hoodie to dress up a slightly (and the key word is slightly) more formal piece that might be otherwise unsuitable for day time such as an embellished skirt or shorts is ideal – and this charcoal grey Prana hoodie might be the perfect option.
A cap might be the most difficult item to transition from casual days to something a little bit more elegant, but it can be done – this is an advanced fashion skill! Best worn with a drapey tank, shorts, and a bikini on vacation. And make sure if you are wearing a team logo, you are an actual fan! Or just go with something basic, like this black and white BCBG Generation cap.
Clearly, there are plenty of ways to wear sporty styles outside of the gym – just mix them with modern seperates and you’ll have the perfect casual chic style.
*We still don’t approve of traditional sweatpants in public. And leggings still aren’t pants!
