This past Saturday marked the official start of the summer which means it’s the time for patio parties, weekend cookouts and getaway trips to the beach. Yet, before we can start celebrating, it’s important for us to invest in the season’s #1 accessory: a straw hat. This classic summer accessory has always been a staple for the summer season, and lately, they’ve evolved into more modern, edgier versions. Gone are the large, wide-brim hats a la Scarlette O’Hara. They have been replaced with chic visors, fedoras, and even baseball caps. To kick-start your summer celebration, here are 5 straw hat styles you need in your closet, ASAP.
1. Eric Javits Straw Visor, $120
This teeny cap is the perfect example of how the classic straw hat has fused itself with today’s latest trends. Gone are the frills, the bows and the ornaments of traditional hats — all that remains is a chic bill.
2. Genie by Eugenia Kim Hollis Straw Mod Cap, $65
If you’re craving something with a little more coverage, go the classic baseball cap route. This cap embodies the tomboy-esque style of a traditional baseball cap, intermixed with a mod, slightly bowler finish.
3. Kate Spade New York Straw Bow Hat, $98
Big bows are to hats as laces are to sneakers. To capture a more classic vibe to your look, put a bow on it! (But please, skip the ribbons.)
4. Sensi Studio Classic Toquilla Straw Panama Hat, $125
Hats make the ultimate statement piece in the summer. You can’t go wrong with a t-shirt and jeans combo, as long as you’re rocking a killer statement hat on top!
5. Eugenia Kim Sunny Toyo Wide-brim Hat, $415
Of course, for those who just can’t get away from the wide-brim silhouette, there are still plenty to choose from. While this silhouette may seem a bit outdated for many, experts know they also provide the best protection against the sun and all its damage (read: pre-mature wrinkles!). We are all on-board with sun protection!
