Now that the 4th of July has passed and the September Fashion Week shows stand glimmering on the horizon, it’s time to grab a hold of summer and enjoy it while we still can! One of the perks of living in a city where legit summer days can be counted on two hands, is a jam packed public calendar brimming with fun outdoor activities. Festival season is still in full swing so we recommend grabbing a few pals, packing a picnic basket and signing up for every concert, fest, movie in the park, and dance party that you can cram into your schedule. As for wardrobe, keeping things long, lean, and loose is optimal for extra movement, with a pinch of hippie chic that we just can’t live without. Here are a few style staples that you can still get a ton of mileage out of before fall.
This first item may be misleading because few things are more seasonally universal than the denim button down. But for the sake of all things summer, we’re taking a page out of Donna Karan’s S/S style book when she swathed her models in fringe, chambray and over-sized caftans for that subdued haute hippie look that is so eponymous with outdoor fests. While we don’t mind the boyfriend fit of Karan’s collection, we picked a lighter, more distressed version from Ryder that you can throw on over a romper or maxi dress for that extra dose of cowgirl cool.
You can’t discuss “summer concert” wardrobe without dropping the word “caftan”. When else can we drape ourselves in gauzy fabrics and put flowers in our hair without getting sideways glances from the general public? So we say, go big or go home when it comes to the caftan. Anna Sui agreed in her Spring/Summer 2014 collection, cooking up crafty crocheted caftans as part of her celestial, bohemian theme. We love the feel of a gauzy fabric against our skin so took Sui’s idea and opted for a lighter option in this dreamy confection by LIV. Doubling as a fest-worthy caftan or a swimsuit cover up, this flirty and floral number will convince you to take the after party to the beach!
Festival and concert fashion is all about unfussy looks resonate with effortless chic. What better way to translate that than with slipping on just one thing: a jumpsuit. Perfect for laying on blankets (no accidental undie shots in a skirt!) and dancing around (no mid-riff exposure when you raise up your arms!), the grown-up onsie is worth giving a second glance to for the dog days of summer. Tibi kept cool on their Spring/Summer 2014 runways in sleek confections in a refreshing mint. While we love the pastel, we picked a bolder hue in order to stand out in the crowd. Alice and You’s emerald green jumpsuit is light, loose and sure to turn heads everywhere on the fairgrounds.
Of course, what would concert/festival/summer fashion be without the maxi dress? With so many options to choose from, it may get overwhelming to focus on just one trend. Our favorite of-the-moment print is a bold floral that runs vertically down a dress for a universally flattering effect. BCBG’s drop-waisted numbers are exactly the look we want to duplicate with it’s comfortable, slouchy chic and sheer panels. But with Keepsake’s Botanic Maxi, we get a Polynesian vibe that we didn’t realize we were missing until we found it. All that’s needed is a flower in your hair. Enjoy the rest of the summer, groovy chicks!
