Makeup Mistakes, Make You Look Older

Are you fighting the good fight? Really? As you get older, you need to amend and change your makeup habits. What worked for you ten years ago, just might be working against you today. So I had a conversation with my friend and celebrity makeup artist Dara Klein (@daramascara) about common mistakes aging women make when it comes to makeup. We came up with the following top 6 makeup blunders and how the correct techniques can help you properly wipe the years away.

1. Over-powdering

Applying too much powder actually enhances fine lines and wrinkles and doesn’t give the same smooth effect it once did. Why? Your skin is becoming more porous and drier. Dara recommends using translucent blotting powder, blotting papers and/or bronzer over a tinted moisturizer to keep makeup looking fresher longer.

Try: Laura Mercier Invisible Pressed Setting Powder, $34

2. Using colored lip liners

Try to avoid using colored lip liners that match your lipstick. The definition now looks harder on potentially thinning lips. Dara suggests using a flesh-toned liner instead to keep lips looking enhanced and not drawn. This way when the color wear off, your not left with that tel tale ring around your lips.

3. Caking on shimmery/glittery eyeshadows

Proceed with caution! Not knowing where to apply shimmery shadow as you age won’t do you any favors. It could be enhancing what you are trying to minimize…dry and/or crepe-y skin around the eyes. Strategically place shimmer on the inner corner of the eye and only matte under the brow bone. We aren’t saying you can’t use shimmer shadows at all, we are simply suggesting you use them sparingly.

Try: Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette, $29

4. Put to rest ‘light-dark-light’ eyeshadow application

Avoid creating a ‘V’ looking crease shade with your old L’Oreal palette circa ’95. Rather softly shade a matte tone with a large blender brush to give depth to a protruding brow bone and/or lift a down turned eye. The liner should be darker than the cease shade.. This will more effectively enhance your eye color and not the makeup.

5. Using harsh eyeliner

Blending to soften hard lines is key to pretty makeup as you age. Leave the harsh, contrived, obvious edges and cat-eyes to editorial layouts and invest in a good blending brush and smudged brush to break up liner. You also want an easy-to-blend liner.

6. Applying old mascara

Is that mascara more than 3 months old? Flaking happens more on an aging face – period. Add an old mascara into the mix and the only thing you’ve enhanced is the fact you used to have great lashes. Be sure to replace your mascara every 3 months and keep the lashes coated from root to tip.

Try: Mally Beauty Volumizing Mascara, $20
