Fashion Summer to Fall

It’s definitely that time of the year, when the weather is still pretty hot in most areas, but you’re dying to wear all your new fall gear. Blazers, sweaters, tights, jackets, knit caps are all good, but the weather isn’t cooperating. Here’s how to mix and match fall and summer pieces in order to look fresh right now.

Pick Chunkier FootwearGoing with booties or chunkier shoes (as opposed to a more delicate sandal) can anchor summer’s floaty little dresses and skirts. Choose a pale color like these dove gray suede booties by Sam Edelman to keep the overall feeling from being too heavy.

Add Some LeatherA moto-styled vest or jacket, leather leggings instead of denim or even just a darker handbag with extra hardware adds a cooler edge to softer pieces. For instance, throwing this navy Helmut Lang vest over a flowy dress could take an outfit from June to September in an instant, and we love the rich navy as an alternative to black. Cognac, chocolate brown, and whiskey hues also work well.

Rock Bolder JewelrySwitching your fragile chains and stacking rings for oversize cocktail baubles, statement earrings, and other more striking pieces adds visual weight to a warm weather ensemble. We like this giant cuff bracelet by Lisa August. The mix of neutrals makes it a versatile piece for all seasons.

Go Dark With Your Lips And NailsSwapping your summer pinks and corals for berries, burgundies, and rich deep reds can make an outfit read as “autumn” even if that is all you change. Urban Decay’s new Pulp Fiction lipstick is quickly becoming a modern classic, and for your nails, Nars Jungle Red is impeccable on nearly every skin tone. Deep purples, plums and even blues and metallic charcoals are fun as well.

Layer Your Sheer PiecesThere’s something undeniably elegant and a little bit sexy about layers of sheer fabric, especially in black, grays, or pale neutrals. And layering properly can mean you’re perfectly covered – the sheer bits are an accent, not an invitation. This French Connection navy and black sweatshirt is slouchy and cool – and perfectly pairs with skinny jeans and boots for daytime, or tailored shorts and showstopping heels for for a chic yet relaxed evening look.

Choose Ivories And CreamsOptic or cool-toned white is pretty much always going evoke thoughts of summer or tropical climates, but an ivory top with subtle trim like this Theory silk blouse can be perfect for late summer and early fall, especially when paired other soft neutrals.

Remember Sportswear Is SeasonlessThe popular luxe sportswear trend is ideal for transitioning between seasons in general. Sneakers instead of sandals, silky, fitted track pants instead of shorts, and perhaps even a track jacket like this classic black and white Adidas style paired with a slim casual skirt all work well.

Call it back-to-school syndrome or maybe we’re just inspired by all the new clothes and accessories in our favorite boutiques, but we’re ready for fall right now.
