SPF Beauty Products, wear with makeup

It took me a long time to figure it out, but I now wear sunscreen on my face. Every. Single. Day. I have been for the past 10 years. Now, I’m not going to lie. I abused the sun for many, many years. I was guilty of sunbathing with baby oil and putting nothing on my face until well into my 20’s. Oh hell, part of my 30’s too. Now, I don’t leave the house (rain or shine) without it.

Once my dermatologist drilled into my thick skull I should be applying a facial sunscreen with SPF 30 under makeup everyday unless I wanted to look 80 at 50 and I got the message. She told me it’s never too late to start trying to reverse the damage I’ve already caused and at the very least, I should do what I can starting now. Even if you are not in direct sunlight it’s still imperative to wear sunscreen. UVA rays penetrate glass. That’s why you may notice more sunspots on the left side of your face – the side that faces the window when you are driving.

People who use sunscreen daily will have younger looking skin. It’s just a fact. Broad-spectrum sunscreens with an SPF 15 or higher block out 93% of ultraviolet (UVB & UVA) rays both of which cause skin to age and can cause skin cancer. So if you block the rays…you block sun spots and wrinkles. Years ago facial sunscreens over 15 SPF would greatly alter the way your foundation and makeup applied, but luckily formulas have changed with the times and demand. Finding an SPF 30 or above that does not irritate or mess with your makeup is much easier to find today. Just make sure you apply enough and keep applying every couple of hours, especially if you are sweating or swimming.

Now, you aren’t going to stave off the aging process forever, but using sunscreen daily will delay photoaging which will make your skin look younger and more subtle longer. Here are my top 6 facial sunscreen picks that won’t mess with your makeup and most have added benefits. No more excuses!

1. Chantecaille Ultra Sun Protection Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Primer, $89

This sunscreen is one of the best on the market today. It protects collagen by a bunch of ways you don’t need to really understand, but it also serves as a primer and makes makeup go on flawlessly, meaning you need less.

2. Erno Laszlo Firmarine Moisturizer SPF 30, $195

Firm your skin as well as protect it! This SPF is the bomb! Moisturize and firm your skin while protecting it? Say no more. Spirulina Maxima boosts the skin’s immunity and resiliency as it feeds collagen growth for greater firmness and bounce.

3. Shiseido Urban Environment Oil-Free UV Protector Broad Spectrum SPF 42 For Face, $30

This sunscreen is a fan-favorite because it goes on light, contains no oil, and does not effect your makeup whatsoever. So if you have oily skin, this is the one for you! It contains mineral powders and herbal extracts which gives your skin a pore-free and shine-free finish.

4. Olay Regenerist Advanced Anti-Aging UV Defense Regenerating Lotion SPF 50, $19.19

I had to include one sunscreen you can find at any drugstore so you really have no excuses! This past Saturday I learned all about the Olay Rengerist line and the dermalogic research that goes behind it, so you get a lot of smash for the cash. It’s light, not greasy and it won’t clog your pores. Additionally it’s an anti-aging formula which will help with the appearance of fine lines.

5. Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral Powder SPF 45, $45

If you don’t feel comfortable applying a base of SPF, then carry this in your makeup bag and apply throughout the day…just as you would powder. This one contains a mineral SPF of 45 and upon application immediately blocks out UVA, UVB, and infrared rays. Better yet, the light, matte powder will give your complexion a smooth, radiant, youthful look. I keep one on me and have been known to apply it on my kids’ faces in a pinch.

6. dermalogica Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30, $43.20

It’s no secret, I love my dermalogica products and this one is a favorite. It’s fragrant and color free and smoothes fine lines. It creates a flawless palette for your makeup like nobody’s business. Your skin will be instantly flawless.

An Extra One: Smashbox ‘Camera Ready’ BB Cream SPF 35, $39

I added the best BB Cream with SPF of any significance I could think of because I just know there are going to be some of you that will resist wearing an SPF under your makeup. This BB Cream has become a cult-favorite because it moisturizes, primes, perfects, protects and controls oil in one step. It will keep your skin shine-free while maintaining moisture. Smashbox claims this product will significantly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles after four weeks of use. Wear alone or under your makeup for added coverage.
