Vintage Suits

Do you sometimes yearn for yesteryear when getting dressed to the nines didn’t mean you had a special event to attend? I do. I always look to the old movies and wish when I hear a mother tell their children to, “Go get dressed for dinner,” those expectations are still there in today’s society. Don’t get me wrong, I love being able to bundle up in comfy and warm clothes in these harsh Chicago winters or in inclement weather, but I’ve found that some people have taken dressing down to the extreme and the art form of dressing up has been lost.

One major fashion icon that was synonymous with sophistication and style was Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, or Jackie O as many of her fans would call her. Wife of John F. Kennedy in the early 1960s, Jackie Kennedy became a trendsetter whose style was followed by ladies all around the world. She loved her couture labels including Chanel, Dior and Givenchy and even had her own designer, friend Oleg Cassini, to create her presidential styles during her role as the first lady. Her staple style included tailored to perfection suits, notch or round collar three quarter sleeves jackets, above-the-elbow gloves and the iconic pillbox hat. This fine-tuned style quickly became the envy and go-to for all women and was quickly picked up by manufacturers for the mass market.

Though that exact style has evolved over the years, the trend of the classically tailored suit has not gone away. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis put it on the map, and we should enjoy paying homage to her desire to want to look sleek, stylish and sophisticated every time we step out. The great thing about this trend is that most of us already have the components in our closet. Pull out your favorite pencil shirt and pair it with a shrunken blazer. Even if they are not a matching suit, that’s OK. Keep one of your pieces neutral and have fun with the other! Top it off with a string of pearls a la Jackie O and I guarantee you’ll walk with a little more pep in your step!
