It feels like plaid has been a fall trend since…forever. But trust me when I say it’s the “It” print this fall. Don’t believe me? Designers like Victoria Beckham, Rodarte, Thakoon, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Vera Wang, Altuzarra, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Delpozo, and Zimmerman all went mad for plaid. Some like Delpozo and Altuzarra chose to take plaid up a notch and go bold and bright. Others highlighted typical tartan plaids. Now they are everywhere! From Neiman Marcus to GAP. If you are afraid of looking too 90’s grunge or Cher-like in Clueless, it’s all in the styling for keeping it fresh. Plaid is actually very versatile and can take you from casual day to dressy night.
I suggest wearing a plaid statement piece and keeping the rest of your outfit simple and monochrome. For instance, wear a bold plaid sweater over a denim shirt and pair with black leather pants. Or a plaid shirt tied at the waist with a plain pencil skirt with booties. Since plaid is so bold be sure to wear it on the areas you want to highlight. For example, I am large chested and don’t like to look larger in that area, so I prefer plaid skirts to tops. Most plaid pants scare me, so I tend to avoid those all together. But if I had long, thin legs, I would rock it for sure. Mixing plaid is the most modern way to wear plaid, but you can be treading in dangerous waters if you don’t know what you are doing. You don’t want to look crazy. If you must try mixing plaids (I will pass thank you) remember to keep everything in the same color family, and vary the scale of each print so the look is not overwhelming. Or leave it to the designer to mix for you. Marc Jacobs and Clover Canyon both have beautiful mixed plaid items for this season. If you are not confident you can pull off the plaid trend at all, dabble with plaid shoes or a handbag.
