It has taken me years to perfect my night routine and yes, it’s always evolving…especially considering each year it seems it gets harder to find the right products to combat the constant onslaught of aging issues I’m facing. It’s not a matter of the number of steps as it is finding the right steps. Who really wants to spend 30 minutes every evening getting ready for bed? Aside from getting enough sleep (at least 7 hours) drinking enough water ( 2.7 liters or about 11 cups a day), eating well and getting exercise here is what you should be doing at night to keep looking young(er);
1. Wash and exfoliate.
Every evening use a gentle cleanser and cleansing brush. Don’t underestimate the deep yet gentle cleansing you can get by adding a cleansing brush to your regimen. It really makes a difference. Once or twice a week, use an anti-aging spa quality mask to do the dirty work of fixing what is going wrong. Then every evening I use a Dermalogica Daily Resurfacer pad which is a leave-on exfoliating treatment to brighten and tone most skin conditions.
2. Apply serum. As you age serums become essential because they have higher concentrations of active ingredients and seep deeper into the layers of the skin than regular moisturizers. Pick a serum that targets your main skin concern (wrinkles, age spots, or hyerpigmantation) and be sure to apply just a pea-sized amount. I like Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Power Serum because it targets everything.
3. Treat your eyes. First use a serum specifically for the delicate eye area and then an eye cream every evening.
4. Moisturize. Night creams are formulated to work with the body’s natural healing cycle and cell turnover. Most are enriched with vitamins and antioxidants to help repair damage as you sleep. Apply a dime-size amount to your entire face, neck and chest. I use a lighter one in the summer and a heavier one in the winter months when my skin tends to be a bit drier.
