Longing for Sweater Days

Sweaters Fall 2014

I am writing this on the first cloudy day in Los Angeles since I moved here in May. I have been complaining for weeks about not being able to wear cute sweaters and little jackets like my friends in Chicago and New York are in their Instagram photos. Everyone here probably thinks I’m nuts! Whatever!?!? I’m thrilled to have had to step out for my morning dog walk in long clothes (i.e., long pants and a long-sleeved shirt). Tomorrow they’re calling for rain. Hurray!

For weeks, I’ve been looking longingly at my favorite fall sweaters neatly folded in acid free paper stacked in clear storage boxes and arranged by weight and color. Just a few days ago, a cashmere turtleneck seemed just a distant dream. Today I feel hopeful and believe it may be possible in the not so distant future. This break, albeit likely temporary, in California’s seemingly endless summer has me musing on all the delicious fall clothes I saw in February and in stores this past sweltering July in LA.

So, dear reader, even if you live in the sunbelt of California, Texas and Florida, it’s time to give in to fall. Here are few of my must-have sweaters for the season that are just a few clicks away from being neatly folded and stacked in your closet.

Sweaters are a microcosm of the fall winter season. You will find just as many key trends in this category as you will in dresses or coats. Texture, of course, is a key trend and the texture of the season is boucle. This winter white wool boucle Gucci pullover is the essence of chic this winter. The black leather cuffs serve as hand warmers should you forget your gloves in your rush to meet the world and winter weather in this stunning look.

If winter is a little lighter wherever you are, you’ll want to take advantage of this season’s net trend in sweaters. This is no deconstructionist chic hobo trend. This season, the net effect is artfully woven into shapely body conscious sweaters like this Helmut Lang crewneck sweater that gives the impression of a supremely chic tube top. Although perfect by itself for cool days in warm climates, you’ll need a coat in cooler ones – but that’s a topic for another column!

Lace is yet another hot trend in sweaters, both inset and overlaid. This Dolce and Gabbana layered sweater features a lace applique trompe l’oeil vest. The layered sleeves add to the overall effect of coziness. Sorry, snowbirds, I don’t think your air conditioning can be set low enough to sport this one.

If layering is you fall/winter fashion strategy, then you simply must invest in the color of the season – fuschia. Whatever weight you choose, this bright pop of color will lift your spirits on the dreariest of winter days. Layer this Diane von Furstenberg cashmere sweater with this season’s leather jacket or even another sweater and you’ll be secure in knowing that you’ve nailed the seasonal color trend.

I couldn’t wrap up a sweater round up without talking about graphics. This season, it’s birds; Starlings, to be specific. You will find them in the McQueen and McCartney collections and those of many other lesser known designers (and no, their names do not all start with Mc). Ms. McCartney opted for individual photo real designs of the more colorful African subspecies. Although most subspecies of the Starling are known for their dark iridescent plumage, Sarah Burton chose an impressionist graphic featuring flocks of the birds rendered in black. The effect emphasizes the beauty of these birds in flight. Starlings are highly social and you will be too when you wear them.

Well, dear reader, I’m off to plan my rainy day outfit. Who knows when I’ll need another one here in sunny Southern California? This is a big event for me! Stay tuned though – I’ll be back soon with more fall/winter 2015 news.
