Moschino Opens in Los Angeles

Moschino opened its first U.S. boutique in Los Angeles today at 8933 Beverly Boulevard. The first concept store conceived by creative director Jeremy Scott is a 3,500-square-foot space, formerly Hadid Gallery. It presents Scott’s colorful, pop vision in a clean, white space with large plate-glass windows facing the manicured street to show off the large-form installations, oversize cola cans with mannequins in graphic crushed can-printed dresses and separates perched in cheeky poses. Scott’ appointment as creative director of Moschino in 2013 has reinvigorated the house and he brings the Los Angeles energy that is captivating the fashion world.

Moschino sits on a stretch of Beverly Boulevard west of fashion-heavy Robertson Boulevard, which is part of the West Hollywood Design District. Most tenants are furniture stores, showrooms and art galleries, though Stella McCartney is a few doors east and Jenni Kayne’s retail flagship and Hedi Slimane’s design studio are a few blocks west.

Gucci Expected to Announce Alessandro Michele As Creative Director

Gucci is expected to announce on Wednesday the appointment of Alessandro Michele as creative director, succeeding Frida Giannini. WWD was the first to report on January 10 that Michele was likely to take over Giannini’s role. Michele took the bow at the Gucci men’s show on Monday afternoon along with a dozen members of the house’s design team.  With the announcement, the Italian luxury group is slated to confirm Michele’s appointment to helm the design team, after his first appearance on the runway on Monday, surrounded by a dozen members of the team. Gucci officials declined to comment at this time.

Thalia Sodi Collection Launches in February at Macy’s

Thalia Sodi, the Mexican songstress, soap star and wife of music mogul Tommy Mottola is bringing her sultry Latina style and effusive personality to mainstream retailing by teaming with Macy’s on an exclusive multiyear Thalia Sodi Collection. The launch is set for the first week of February, and there’s nothing coy about it — not the look, the distribution or the celebrity behind it. At the outset, 300 Macy’s stores and macys.com will sell the collection, which contains over 200 stockkeeping units.

“It’s the biggest private-brand launch in the history of our company by a long shot,” said Jeffrey Gennette, Macy’s president. “It’s the first time we’ve launched a private brand in multiple categories — dresses, tops, pants, shoes and jewelry. There isn’t a metro market that won’t have some level of exposure to the brand,” with the highest concentration in states such as Texas, Florida and California, and cities like New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus and Detroit, with the largest Latin American communities.
