For anyone who lives in a climate where there are four seasons (or more), this is the time of the year when fashion gets schizophrenic. All the spring styles are already available in store and online, but the weather is not cooperating, to say the least.
So what do you wear when you are anticipating milder temperatures, but still need to keep warm? There are a couple ways you can bring spring into your wardrobe even though the mercury is still hovering around zero. Here some of our favorites:
Switch Up Your Color Palette. Swapping out your winter jewel tones, grays, and blacks for softer hues or tropical brights can go a long way towards “warming” your outfit up. For example, isn’t this draped citrine yellow Alexander Wang dress a lot more cheerful than your typical winter blacks, grays or navy blues? Add a deep blue cropped cardigan and maybe navy tights to make it cold weather chic.
Mix Hard And Soft. A leather jacket or leather pants can add an edge (and some much-needed warmth) to most outfits. And in general, mixing in new textures can be a great way to wear your spring clothes while there’s still snow on the ground. Another good option is a simple and sleek black leather vest like this one by Veda – you can through it on over anything all year round and feel just a bit more badass.
White Out. The idea that you shouldn’t wear white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day is old school and old news. An all-white (or cream or ivory) palette is one of the most modern and chic choices at the moment, and fortunately there are plenty of options available. For instance, this Donna Karan New York tunic top paired with the suggested white denim and perhaps a blazer for warmth is the perfect post-holiday party look, and you can wear it all spring and summer (sans blazer) as well.
Get Creative With Jewelry. Just because it is too cold for breezy little dresses and shorts doesn’t mean that you should ignore your summer jewelry. Wide cuff bracelets, chandelier earrings and bright statement necklaces that you’d normally pair with maxi dresses can also work in the winter. For instance, the Atlas necklace by Vanessa Mooney would look equally at home over a sweater as it would over a tank top, and the unusual silhouette is more interesting than the rhinestone-crammed costume pieces that have been popular for the past several years.
Check Out The Resort Collections. While not all of us are lucky enough to visit the warmer parts of the world during the winter, we all can enjoy the look of resort collections. Sometimes there are pieces that will blend with your winter wardrobe that will at least give you a small part of the feeling of being on vacation. Hey, sometimes you have to take what you can get. Even a fun pair of sunglasses like this turquoise Roberto Cavalli pair can liven up your mood.
Change Your Fragrance Game. A new perfume might be the best way to lighten up your mood and get in touch with your summery self. We like Guerlain’s Aqua Allegoria Mandarine Basilic, but there are plenty of beachy scents that will make you feel like its summer already.
How do you lighten up your winter wardrobe? It’s about fifteen degrees outside at the time of writing so we’ll take any tips we can get. That said, we do recommend that you avoid being “that person” who wears entirely seasonally inappropriate clothing. No you can’t winterize that sundress or those strappy sandals!
