Best Spring Skirts and Shoes

The Vernal Equinox is not just a celestial event sacred to druids. It is also a turning point for most fashionistas – and their closets. I celebrated the first day of spring by getting up early, strolling on the beach with my dog, wearing my favorite vintage Tenuki fur vest. Then I tore through my closets and pulled out all the fur for cold storage as well as all the winter weight anything. Yes, dear reader, it’s that time again. Time to turn your closets over!

With all this extra space in your closets, you will need a few new things. I pondered how to review the spring trends with you and I finally hit on it – skirts! Like those first crocuses breaking through the snow and ice, skirts are the perfect way to herald in the spring fashion season. Punxatawny Phil may have called for six more weeks of winter, but it’s still time to change your mindset – and your wardrobe – even if you have to layer some tights under your new fashion.

Skirt shapes are a varied this season as the first flowers of spring. You will definitely need an A-line skirt in your wardrobe and it will be the perfect thing to wear during these pesky last six weeks of winter weather. Paired with opaque tights, this Jil Sander A-Line skirt is a two-fer, hitting the major silhouette trend and the very important abstract print trend in graphics this season.

Color blocking is big again this season. Thank you Reed Krakoff for having paved the way for this to now perennial trend. This season, look for pastel color blocks or brights blocked against white. Think the classic YSL Mondrian dress, with the black lines just implied. This Akris Punto color block mini skirt makes a great spring layering piece. The curve of the color block softens the edges and creates a slimming trompe l’oeil effect.

Eyelet is another strong spring trend. This Philip Lim 3.1 knee length skirt features square eyelets that add a geometric effect. This visual effect of the inset will make you look both taller and slimmer. Imagine all that – from a white skirt!

Skirt lengths are all over the map this season, but the key look to add to your wardrobe is a midi length pencil skirt. This length instantly elongates the legs and makes you look glamazon tall. This particular Burberry skirt is a triple threat:  midi length, pencil shape AND lace! I know that designers – and I – have been pushing lace skirts on you for several seasons now but this season the look has finally exploded.

While I’ve enjoyed laying out the Spring 2015 trends in black-and-white (actually, just in white) for you, I’m sure you’re wondering where the color is this season. Any of the trends I mentioned can be executed in the season’s pale pastel color palette, but the real color this spring comes in the accessories. Multi-color is the “new black.” If matte black or nude patent are your go-to “neutral” shoes, it’s time to spring forward into the fashion avant garde. Rainbows go with everything  – and save the perfect color matching for June bridesmaid season.

Christian Louboutin’s rainbow watersnake stiletto has a slightly softer toe than last year’s truly pointy-toe pump. While the season’s must-have shoe silhouette is the pointy toed slingback pump, I just couldn’t resist tempting you with Valentino’s studded rainbow cabana stripe T-strap pump.

Inertia is the enemy of fashion. When you “spring forward” your clocks every year, remember to move forward with your fashion. Spring is a time of spiritual renewal and new emotional growth. Make sure your fashion grows with you!
