Music and design team Mark and Estel have been on the scene for the last ten years, having made a strong debut with their signature collection of rock and roll inspired high end fashion tees, dresses, casual separates and accessories. Thirteen seasons later and they are still going strong, showing steadily at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, being a mainstay in celebrity closets and keeping up amongst the other greats in ready-to wear-fashion. I had the pleasure to get further insight on their process and the future of Mark and Estel through a much appreciated interview with both of them.
SCS: We can’t all be rock stars! Even though we’d all love to be; who is the everyday woman that you design for?
M&E: She’s not just one type of women. She’s smart, she’s elegant, she’s witty, and she’s bold. She’s a rockstar in her own way. We design for her comfort, whether she’s running everyday errands or the bell of the ball.
SCS: Are there any markets that you have not yet expanded into or a specific market you’d like to get into?
M&E: There are always new markets to explore. We just recently launched our own print textiles simultaneously with our F/W 2015 collection. Just before that we also launched our accessory line including silk chiffon scarves and hosiery. We would like to continue moving forward with both additions and find where it leads the brand next.
SCS: Take us through your creative process when coming up with a concept or developing a new collection.
M&E: Our designs are strongly inspired by our music. We begin with creating our song first, and then we immerse ourselves in the music in order to capture the mood, and embody that mood in a visual form through our collections.
SCS: If you hadn’t made it big with your collections, what would you be doing?
M&E: It is hard to imagine life with out designing. We have always been creatively driven, so it is only natural that we would continue work along those lines. If we weren’t designing, Estel would most likely be extravagantly painting in a gallery and Mark rocking out on his guitar on a stage nearby.
