There’s a new format of cycling class offered at Equinox Gold Coast in Chicago: The Pursuit by Equinox. It’s a competitive cycling class combining in-class challenges with real-time data. You feel like you are a part of a video game! I know because I tried the class last week instructed by Jennifer Hogg. I have to confess, I’m not big on cycling classes (except when Lauren used to teach back when she was still in Chicago), however the interactive aspect kept me going. Projected on the wall were light show graphics and our bike numbers suddenly popped up – using data from our bike consoles – in a ring of fire! Don’t worry, your number is anonymous, so you can go at your own pace. You can watch your level stay within a target zone dictated by each game and your ring of fire will burn to a glow if you reach the ultimate peak. Jenn instructed us through several games and intervals. She also warned us to keep hydrated (the class can be quite strenuous) and to keep pedaling to keep in motion in order to stay in the game. The high scorers’ numbers are highlighted after each game. Besides that, your personal class stats can be tracked on your individual Equinox training app and in a dedicated cycling section of the Equinox website so you can see your fitness progress. Yes, the future is here!
There are 2 types of Pursuit classes. Take on intense and demanding hill stages with The Pursuit: Build, designed to improve endurance, increase strength and improve your ability to work harder for longer. Or, set the bike on fire with precisely timed HIIT intervals with The Pursuit: Burn, created to maximize performance and optimize caloric expenditure. This was the class I tried. It passed my own litmus test (I was completely drenched in sweat) and I could feel the burn in my legs the next day, which proves to me this class can get my body toned for the summer months ahead!
