Vintage: Love Your Leather All Year Long

Lightweight Leather

We made it!  Summer is finally here and with the start of the much anticipated warm weather, we are all ready to bring out our lightweight and easy-breezy favorites. However this time around, I want to focus on an unexpected vintage trend for the summer: Leather! I love the contradiction of wearing leather in the summer. It doesn’t have to be black, thick and structured (although that is our favorite part of the fall/winter, right?). Leather can be just as lightweight and flowing as the cottons and linens we wear in the warm weather months. Not to mention, leather is no longer confined only to blacks and browns. Take it to the next level by working it in bright colors, pastels and creamy neutrals.

Without going too deep into the history of leather (some of the first humans that walked the planet draped themselves in animal hides!) it started to gain its modern day popularity in the 1960s. Mod, patent leather dresses with hemlines up to there, leather jackets and pants took hold amongst the youth of the time. The trend spread like wildfire and has maintained its popularity into present day, with the expansion of silhouettes, colors and quality. Today, leather is seen as a status symbol, becoming much more coveted and revered during times of economic distress, but still available to the masses in many forms and at many price points.

Leather for summer can range from a 1960s mod style dress to a show stopping sandal or just a tiny accent or accessory. This trend that was once virtually taboo in the heat of the summer is almost a must these days! And with so many quality faux leathers on the market, leather can fit into any budget. My favorite way to rock leather in the heat is to opt for an accent piece like a small bag or brightly colored sandal. However for the more daring ladies out there, don’t be afraid to go full on with a sheath dress, tank top or a mini or midi length skirt.
