Cue the “Hallelujah” chorus because summer is finally here! And while summer vacations get booked and patio parties get planned, one major item on your to-do list is to update your summer wardrobe! But don’t panic and think you have to break the bank. All you really need are some perfectly placed pieces in bright, bold and candy-colored hues for a fresh take on your style favorites.
Even though we’re all more than ready to push our coats, hats and gloves to the back of the closet, lightweight scarves should remain within arm’s reach during the warm weather months. On the Spring/Summer 2015 runways, designers infused shots of color into neutral ensembles with a strategically placed scarf and we feel we have to follow suit. Swap out the wools and cashmere with a breezy cotton or linen. And take a page from our favorite take on the look, Ralph Lauren’s runway, and opt for a bold magenta (like this amazingly budget-friendly version from Target), violet or periwinkle in the always chic purple family.
Where would a piece on summer brights be without pink? Arguably the most cheerful and mood-inspiring hue, hot pink or fuchsia pieces are the quickest way to get happy this season. 3.1 Phillip Lim got the memo, and integrated the summery shade into the expert layering of his Spring/Summer 2015 collection. We took it one step further by lowering the hemline and opting for more of a maxi skirt look (perfect for concerts and festivals!), courtesy of Mes Demoiselles for a look that’s all the chic, none of the sticker shock.
If you’re not already beaming from pinks and purples, you simply have to be now that we’re on the topic of yellow. The color of sunlight, daffodils and pretty much summer itself — yellow is a color that always has it’s time and place. Fashion mavens who are hesitant to envelope themselves in the happy hue, lest it become too juvenile, can pick one item like a pair of shoes to make a very curated style statement. Marc by Marc Jacobs chose chunky boots to punctuate his mostly monochromatic Spring/Summer 2015 collection. We thought a dainty and ladylike pair of flats would get the most mileage this season and found the perfect pair in these amazingly decadent Pucci pointed-toes, which will last you many seasons to come.
Staying in the shoe game, sometimes the brightest color to show off is simply not a color at all. White footwear has made an incredible comeback on the runways of the last few seasons. Endlessly chic and effortlessly elegant, these are not for the faint of heart nor the frequenter of outdoor romps. But for the office, cocktails or a summer wedding, designers like Alexander Wang proved that white sandals have become a true summer style staple. Who better to provide a day-to-day option than Cole Haan, whose thick leather ankle strap and chunky printed heel is the perfect marriage of fashion and function on the “Cambon” sandal. This season, perk up your mood and your wardrobe with these amazing summer brights!
