No More Skinny Jeans: Go With The Flow

Skinny jeans are a modern classic and can be quite flattering on most figures, but sometimes (especially if you live in the northern hemisphere or in a hot climate), you don’t always want to deal with tight denim or similar fabrics in the heat. Enter the wide leg pant – in linen, silk, or other drapey fabrics they can look quite elegant whether you are wearing them casually or as an alternative to a skirt or long dress for a more formal event. Here are some of our favorites.

Silk Prints: While these might not be the best choice for a summer in the city, a silk pair of wide leg pants is undoubtedly ideal for a tropical night or vacation. These Derek Lam floral print pants bring to mind Hawaiian prints – in a good way! Throw them on over a solid color swimsuit and you’re set for beachy or pool-side style.

The Linen Look: Linen pants are a summertime classic, and for good reason. The fabric is light, breezy and perfectly casual – ideal for a beach trip or simply enjoying some drinks or a meal on a city patio. This Max Studio pair is a modern classic.

Proportions Matter: If your pants create a flowy or drapey silhouette on the bottom, it is important to balance that out with something more fitted or shorter on top, like this red and black Alexander Wang top. It would be perfect with black silky wide leg pants.

Bold Colors Make A Statement: Try skipping the standard neutrals in favor of something bright, especially for evening. Emerald green, sapphire blue, and ruby red all work well, and you probably already have a neutral top or other accessories in your wardrobe.

Crop It Off: While cropped wide leg pants may bring up images of gauchos or similarly horrid trends, they don’t have to all be bad. In fact, this pair from Urban Outfitters provides the perfect background to show off your favorite sandals.

The Yoga Look: We’re not huge fans of wearing yoga pants or similar styles anywhere except the actual yoga studio or gym, but we can make an exception for a pair that’s as elegantly simple as these Studio M fold over black pants.

Yes, skinny jeans show off your figure and they do look great tucked into boots. But there is something undeniably glamorous about flowy wide legs, plus they are more comfortable in the summer. So think resort wear and try out a new silhouette for summer. Let us know what your favorite style is!
