Male Box: Fall 2015 Stream of Consciousness

Pre-Fall, Tom Ford, Gucci

July 15. The date is forever marked in my calendar as the drop date for Pre-Fall collection. In other words, the delicious items I first saw on runways in January (men’s ready-to-wear), then saw in person and ordered at trunk shows in May are beginning to arrive.

Theoretically, they’ll all be ready to go on the Tuesday Labor Day after I’ve spent the weekend changing my closet over. But, who can wait?

On July 15th, I jumped out of bed and put on dark jeans, a t shirt and my new D Squared fringe leather jacket. Then I stepped out into the California sunshine and 93 degrees – at 9 am. I set the air conditioning in my car to 60 degrees, drove to my normally frigid office, and spent the day fielding questions from colleagues about why I was wearing a jacket.

“Today starts Pre-Fall” was my mantra, even though most of my office mates had no idea of what I meant. I jumped back into my car and headed to my noon appointment, blissfully unaware of the increasing outside temperature.

When I stepped out of the car it was 115 degrees. Even I had to give up my Pre-Fall delusions and strip down to a t-shirt like everyone else in California, but I didn’t shed my cowboy boots for flip flops. I haven’t gone that California!

Whether you’re taking delivery now of your fall wardrobe pre-orders or just shopping for ideas, the most exciting development of the season is the arrival of Tom Ford’s ready-to-wear collection. If you buy nothing else this season, you simply must buy a blouse or a dress from this collection.

Tom Ford’s sheer safari blouse with the satin trim is the perfect pre-fall layering piece. Pair it with his tuxedo stripe pants or your favorite jeans – even if they’re not his – and you’ll stop traffic everywhere you go. The Tom Ford long-sleeve macrame lace minidress is another must-have for Fall 2015. If you have the Prada Guipure lace dress from Fall 2008 tucked back in your closet, now would be the time to drag it out. If not, then this au courant version featuring leather trim gives you a reason to drag out your “above the knee” boots from Fall 2012.

High fashion can often seem like a game of musical chairs. You may recall that Tom Ford was creative director of YSL. Hedi Slimane who was Creative Director of Dior Homme now holds that post at the recently renamed Saint Laurent. Slimane claims he draws inspiration from the early days when Yves himself headed Saint Laurent Rive Gauche, as the ready-to-wear line was known then. Why do I bring all this up? Because the perfect Fall 2015 coat to go over your new Tom Ford purchases is the Saint Laurent leopard print goat fur cape coat!

Tom Ford was also Creative Director at Gucci before Ms. Gianinini, his design director of handbags, took over women’s accessories and eventually became Creative Director. Although Fall 2015 was slated to be her last collection for Gucci, incoming Creative Director Alessandro Michele redesigned both the men’s and women’s ready-to-wear collections.

Although the world will never see the last clothing collection she designed, we can definitely see her heritage-inspired design esthetic in the fall accessories. My favorite piece is the Dionysus shoulder bag in the GG Supreme canvas featuring – wait for it – an embroidered “Queen Bee”!

Thank you for indulging me in a bit of stream of consciousness fashion history. While designers may win or lose, perhaps temporarily, in their constant game of musical chairs, you’ll always be a winner in this season’s latest fashions!
