Beauty: Get Sculpted! How to Contour and Highlight Your Face

0 / January 23, 2012 10:00 am

Contouring can be used to enhance your face for many different reasons. You may want to look 10 pounds lighter, want a slimmer looking nose, or may just need a nip and tuck look. Whatever it is, contouring can enhance facial features, add definition and create a sense of balance to the face.

With contouring, you may have heard the terms ’highlights’ and ’low lights’. For example, to highlight your cheeks, apply contour in the hallow area and highlight the apples. You also highlight the brow bone to open the eye and give depth to the crease area.

If all of this sounds a little confusing to you, don’t fret because It Cosmetics has made it wonderfully simple to make your face appear more lifted and bring out your best features instantly! Smashbox, Makup For Ever and Sephora also have contouring kits I recommend.

If you want a no fail help with contouring try IT Cosmetics My Sculpted Face. This palette comes with four contouring shades designed to match all skin tones and two highlighting shades in both a shimmer and matte. The revolutionary waterproof formula is great for your skin and won’t clog your pores. For those with sensitive skin it’s hypo-allergenic and has skin nourishing ingredients like Vitamin E.

With all of that good information, now let’s get down to business. Just how do you contour? Videos can help, and for some women, hands on works better. Why not have a full color chart right in front of you as your own personal reference on where to apply highlighting and where to apply your contour shades?

Here are some helpful tips for when you are contouring and highlighting. For contour, you want to always use a matte shade. It should be 2-4 shades darker than your skin tone and in powder form, however you  may use a cream base and then powder for contouring. For highlighting, use natural shades that are lighter than your skin color, in powder form. With It Cosmetics Palette use your sheer matte or shimmer powders.

I won’t go over how to slenderize your whole face but I’ll give you an example, and I’ll give you some products to try to create your own slenderized beauty.

The easiest contouring and highlighting you can do is to bring out your cheekbones. I love bringing out my cheekbones, especially because they are a little chubby, but yet are very strong.

Contouring Cheekbones:
• First find the narrow line under your cheeks, as most call the hollow of your cheek. That is where you apply your contour color. Whether cream or powder, lightly apply your color with a brush like It Cosmetics Dual Airbrush Foundation/and Concealer Brush, or your fingertips if using creams.
• Next blend, blend, blend.
• Once you have a nice contoured hollow of your cheek you can now apply your highlight color. This by far is my favorite part. Choose your highlight color whether you want a natural matte highlight or a shimmer highlight, and brush it across the top of your cheek bone. You want the highlight to be no higher than the temple area of your face.
• Next, marvel at the creation that is taking place with your newly chiseled cheeks, and then apply your favorite blush, or have fun with It Cosmetics Live, Love, Laugh Anti-Aging Vitality Face Disc that has a wonderful matte bronzer, illuminating order, and brightening blush. (Blush is to be applied just on the apples of your cheek.)

Beauty: Brows To Go! How to Achieve Perfect Brows

0 / January 2, 2012 11:00 am

Eyebrows are one of my favorite features on a face. Not only do they define the face, but they frame and give expression to it. However, a brow can make or break your look. They can be too narrow, too wide, too high or just non-existent. Whatever the issue is with your brows, there are tools to help.  Here are some of my favorite brow tools to use so you can get your brows in tip-top shape.

One of my all time favorite ways of filling in brows is with powder. It may not be for everyone but I love the  consistency, and the way it gives the brows a nice defined look. One of my discoveries and new favorite brow powders that came across my path is LAMIK’S brow powders! Not only are these powders pigmented, but they are very blendable and achieve a real ‘hair’ look to the brows. You only have to apply sparingly where needed, but the best part is that it last for hours!

The Milani Easy Brow Automatic Pencil is one of my best inexpensive finds. When I was told about this pencil, I went out to find it and and every store was sold out. What makes this pencil so great is that they are fail proof. The smooth glide on pencil with a spoolie brush to blend, leaves a natural fill to the brow that I love, and with a retractable tip there is no sharpening required.

What do you do when you don’t know your shade, or have a hard time finding a shade for your brow? Look no further to, It Cosmetics Brow Power Universal Eyebrow Pencil. At first hearing of this universal pencil, I was a little skeptical at the claims that it works on any color brows. How do you achieve in one pencil, a range in at least 4 shades of brow colors? I have darker brows, and the pencil looked blonde, but I gave it a try anyway. Let’s just say I was blown away! With its patent technology this pencil really does deliver as promised. It creates the most natural looking, believable brow and is perfect for both thin and thick brows. It also is long-wearing, waterproof and smudge-resistant.

If you are one that likes to draw your brows in, MAC Brow Pencils are some of the best I have ever tried. With their ultra fine and self sharpening tip, they allow you to create your brows stroke by stroke. I love the colors, the consistency and the richness of these pencils. It’s no wonder they are makeup artists favorites.

I don’t know why but when I think about this product I think about tattoo brows. I assure you this product is far from it but it does give you up to 24 hours of color to your brows. Styli Style’s Brow Tint does wonders if you want a more semi-permanent color that lightly defines the brow. With its water base formula it naturally tints the brows in places where needed and is 100% waterproof. Perfect for very active people.

Last but not least, this travel friendly product gives you perfect, polished brows on-the-go. Smash Box’s Brow Tech to Go, is the ultimate brow tool. The double-ended component includes an angled waterproof pencil and the other end a soft hold gel to groom and set the brows in place. The pencils is highly pigmented so a little pressure, and just a twist up ever so slightly will do. This is the perfect on-the-go brow tool for groomed brows all day long.

2. Milani Easy Brow Automatic Pencil, $4.99

3. It Cosmetics Brow Power Universal Eyebrow Pencil, Universal, $24

4. MAC Eye Brows, $15

Beauty: Six Products To Combat Dry Winter Skin

0 / November 21, 2011 10:00 am

I’m in complete denial that it’s getting cold outside and winter is on the way (I was just at the beach with my toes in the sand!). With cold weather comes many other things, and dry skin is not excluded. I have already started to stock up on my favorite heavy-duty moisturizers and realize that I might have a slight obsession. Especially after TSA threw away my favorite moisturizer at the airport. After that episode, I vowed to never be without it, and went home and ordered three! Did I say I was a little obsessed? Okay, let the rundown of my favorite moisturizers for winter begin!

What can’t I say about this product! Usually I am not a fan of petrolatum products, but I can guarantee you this one is different. I had a tube of Vaseline Deep Moisture Creamy Lotion in a drawer for months, and never used it until I stumbled upon it recently. Well, at first try I was in complete love. This moisturizer was unlike any other I had ever tried. It was moisturizing and  gentle, but kept my hands soft for hours. And you wonder what that infamous tube was that was thrown out by TSA?  Well this was it, and since then I have ordered tons more. It’s great for any part of your body, especially if you have extremely dry skin. You will and cannot go wrong with Vaseline’s Deep Moisture. I caution you, it is hard to find it in stores so find it online.  It does work wonders.

Years ago, I was told about this wonderful moisturizers called Genes Vitamin E Creme. Not only was it a great moisturizer but it has some of the highest IUs of Vitamin E in a single product. The size of this jar of creme will last you forever, and for the price it cannot be beat. For under $10 you get a wonderful, ultra moisturizing creme skin that’s gentle enough for any type of skin and lasts for hours. This is a staple in my household.

There’s nothing you need more in your handbag in these cold months than a great hand cream. I cannot stress it enough. Hand creams are at the top of my list of obsessions just as much as a good body moisturizer. Nivea’s Smooth Indulgence Hand Cream delivers, as both. Nivea products are known for their ultra moisturizing capabilities, and this product that’s newest to their line is amazing. With macadaian nut oil, it has an amazing fragrance and absorbs quickly into dry hands. You’ll love this hand cream just as much as I do!

This next product, looks like a something your mom has had in the medicine cabinet for years, that she used on every child in the house. I even admit, I had it for years and never touched it a bit until recently when I stumbled upon it cleaning out my makeup drawers. Basic Organics Vitamin E Ointment does wonders for dry lips, but also for stretch marks, dry skin and even sore muscles. With wheat germ, vitamin E, and aloe, it is a soothing blend of goodness. Beware if you are looking for a big jar. It only comes in 2 oz. and 4 oz., and may be a little costly for some, but you won’t regret it…

This next gem, I tried months ago at my clients house after washing my hands at her sink, and “OMG”..this product felt amazing. It felt like pure luxury on my hands. Borghese Splendide Mani Smoothing Hand Creme SPF 8 is like a manicure in a tube. With glycerine, and  its moisture-attracting liquid crystal molecules, they guard against moisture loss. Acqua di vita complex adds maximum hydration and helps protect hands from daily abuse as it restores depleted moisture. If you take your hand creams seriously and don’t mind paying a little more, this hand creme is a must!

I love a good all around moisturizer, and I have found that in First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Cream. This super-emollient cream is a whipped perfection and not at all greasy. I love that it doesn’t have a bunch of artificial ingredients and heals just about any skin condition from eczema to psoriasis. With oatmeal, shea butter and eucalyptus oil, it gives a great improvement to distressed skin.  It is truly one of the best all around moisturizers I have ever tried.

1. Vaseline Deep Moisture Cream, from $6.99
2. Genese Vitamin E Creme, from $8.74
3. Nivea Smooth Indulgence Hand Cream, $5.99
4. Basic Organics Vitamin E Ointment, $5.09
5. Borghese Splendide Mani Smoothing Hand Creme SPF 8, 7 oz, $30.00
6. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream, $12 – $28

Beauty: 6 Essentials For The Best At-Home Pedicure

0 / October 24, 2011 10:00 am

As a mother to a toddler who also works and runs a business, finding time for a bi-weekly pedicure is easier said than done. It had been weeks since my last pedi, and was on top of my to-do list. Heaven forbid, I almost resorted to doing  my own. However, a glorious free day arrived, and I headed to the salon. Whether it’s to save money, or just you can’t make your salon visits, you can create pedi bliss right at home with just a few essentials. Here’s what you will need.

First, you want the most essential item for your home pedicure, which is a Foot Spa. You don’t have to have an ultra fancy foot spa, and can get a very affordable one like Dr. Scholl’s Soothing Rolling Massage Foot Spa. Not only is it great for at home pedicures, but it’s perfect for anytime you just need to unwind and soak your feet.

Next, you will need a great foot soak for your bath, that will soothe, soften and revitalize your feet. At my last salon visit I fell in love with a ‘blue’ foot soak they used and remembered how soft my feet were afterward. I sought out for a foot soak that would help me create the same wonderful experience from the salon.  Then I stumbled upon Bath and Body Works True Blue Spa Chamomile and Lavender Effervescent Foot Soak, and let me tell you it’s like champagne for your feet. Infused with rose & orange peel extract, moisturizing aloe, calming chamomile and lavender, it’s the ultimate treatment for your feet.

After your realxing soak, it’s time to buff and exfoliate. If you need a heavy duty tool that will take off everything and rejuvenate your feet, Revlon’s new Pedi-Expert is just for you. No bigger than a bar of soap, this callus shaver, pumice stone, hands-free foot smoother, and flexi-buff foot file, is an all-in-one tool that will make your pedicure experience so much easier. It even comes with a nail clipper and file as an added bonus. If you are in a rush for time, this is all you need before the final steps.

If you are one that likes to take your pedicure a step further, try H20′s Plus Pumice Foot Scrub. This non-oily anti-aging scrub helps soften the feet and is perfect for areas like the top of the foot, ankle and lower leg, where your other tools may not work. And if you want to skip the tools and just want an overall scrub after you soak your feet, this does the job of removing calluses, dead skin and makes your feet perfectly soft to the touch.

After you have soaked, scrubbed, buffed, and filed, you are finally ready to moisturize. At this point it is critical that you use a very emollient, conditioning foot cream that will lock in moisture and keep your feet silk soft. I recommend L’OCCITANE’s Shea Butter Foot Cream. With soothing lavender essential oil and shea butter, this cream will not disappoint!

To top off your freshly moisturized feet, you need something to hold in moisture even longer and keep your feet soft all night. What better way than with AirPlus Aloe Infused Socks? Yes, that’s right — I discovered these gems over a year ago, and gave them away to all the women in my family for Christmas because I loved them that much. Infused with vitamin E and aloe, these are by far the most soothing, soft and comfortable socks I have ever worn. For under $5 a pair, you cannot go wrong with these!

1. Dr. Scholl’s Soothing Rolling Massage Foot Spa, $24.99

2. True Blue Spa Effervescent Foot Soak – Footloose and Fancy Fizz, $15

3. Revlon Pedi-Expert Pedicure Kit, $8.99

4. H2O Plus Pumice Foot Scrub, $15

5. L’OCCITANE Shea Butter Foot Cream, $26

6. Airplus Women’s Aloe Infused Socks, $3.99

Beauty Buzz: Spotlight on Shiseido

0 / September 26, 2011 12:00 pm

This past week I had the opportunity to chat with some of the experts at Shiseido, and learn a little from their fabulous Creative director, Dick Page about his new ideas when it comes to beauty. I’m super excited about their new products, the cool technology they’ve come up with and the pretty new fall colors! Here’s a quick guide on my top favorite products that any beauty junkie must check out!

Bio-Performance Advanced Super Revitalizing Cream’ ($75 for 50ml) – This stuff is genius! Made with super unique ingredients exclusive to Shiseido it claims to improve skins elasticity, fight aging over time, and immediately improve the look and the texture of the skin while giving you visibly younger looking skin. And as a packaging junkie, I can add that the packaging is flawless as well! It’s a simple easy step to smooth over your skin after your cleansing routine. It’s aso reported to provide a cleaner, more even foundation application! Also try the Future Solution LX Ultimate Regenerating Serum ($225 for 30 ml) for a more concentrated and powerful anti-aging serum.

Makeup Shimmering Cream Eye Color ($25) – This perfect formula is an eye shadow, which easily allows you to blend several colors together, but is smudge-proof at the same time. It also includes powerful moisturizing ingredients to improve dryness and keeps your lids looking fresh all day long. It has a very fine shimmer produced by their special ‘Jewel Reflecting Powder’, and an unusual ability to remove excess oils and water in order to resist creasing and fading throughout the day. It comes in twelve new shades that were each inspired a very personal thing in Dick Page’s life and home in New York City! Dick also recommends the lighter brown shades to double as eyebrow definition on blonde girls. My favorite shades are Moss, Sable, Mist, Leather and Caviar.

Perfect Foundation Brush($30) – I am already in love, and personally using this brush which has quickly sold out after it’s recent launch. I’ve noticed the shorter length hairs allows for better coverage and the ability to reach all those tricky crevices under the eyes and around the nose. It’s quickly become a huge hit, and was proven to give a smoother foundation application by nearly all users who gave it a try! Another good thing is that it’s made to work well for liquid makeup, powders, or even a concealer application. The bristles waste less makeup, provide better coverage, and keep makeup lasting longer using less product on your skin! Can’t get much better than that!

Beauty: In The Nude…Nail Polish, That Is

0 / September 19, 2011 11:00 am

Nothing is more flattering to me in-between seasons than nude nails. I can’t tell you know much I love the color, or lack thereof. Nude is the perfect accessory to any wardrobe, and never competes with the fall season’s palette. Here are some of my favorite finds for the perfect nude nail polish.

Nobody does polish better than Deborah Lippmann. Some may disagree, but her polishes are always ‘grown up’, have great coverage and lasting power. What better way to transition into fall than with her Naked nail polish, in a clean bare beige shade. Due to it’s sheerness, you can layer and layer until you find your desired intensity.

Another favorite brand teamed up with Sephora, to give us nail colors galore. Sephora by Opi has any shade you can think of, but neon will not do for fall. Going Nude, Eh? is where I am going. No, I’m not going nude, but it’s the color of the nail color, and you can go nude too . Yes, as they say, it is the perfect ‘naturally sexy in-the-buff’ shade!

Rescue Beauty Lounge with it’s cult following always brings us beautiful shades and they aren’t exempt from giving us the perfect nude shade for fall. Their ‘Sheer Nude’ shade is just what it says – sheer and nude and they go on to say it’s “like an ultra sheer stocking that makes your  fingers look sleek, glossy and very very expensive. Just the color to wear when interviewing for your boss’s job.” Brilliant! How can you go wrong with that?

When it comes to ‘green beauty’ you won’t be disappointed with HIPPxRGB.  Green celebrity nail stylist Jenna Hipp has teamed up with RGB founder Gina Carney to create HIPPxRGB. HIPPxRGB created the first skin tone specific, full coverage, all nude nail color collection. Similar to the concept of foundation for the face, Nail Foundation is the first nail color of its kind designed to match and compliment for a flawless even finish. And one of my favorites is the nail color in ‘F2‘. It’s a universal nude that can be worn by any skin tone.

I’m so happy to tell you about this nail line. I met the lovely founders a few years ago in New York at a Fashion Week mixer. They are the sweetest girls ever, and have a great product to back them up. Ginger + Liz have amazing nail polishes that are good for you (non-toxic) edgy, and modern all in one. Because it’s all about the nudes, you should definitely try ‘Skin Tight‘. How flattering does that sound? And no, we’re not talking Herve Leger skin tight, only nail polish.

Who else does nail polish well, even though they are known for their highly pigmented eye shadows? Yes,of course it’s MAC. They do many things well, and nail polish is one of them. Usually pairing them with coordinating eye shadow shades, these high-gloss formula’s are yummy. They have amazing pigment, gorgeous colors, and a no-streak/no chip finish. Even though it’s a limited-edition, MAC’s ‘MAC Me Over! Xee & Sharon‘ is a gorgeous nude, taupe nail lacquer that works well perfectly for fall!

1. Deborah Lippmann ‘Naked’, $16
2. Sephora by OPI ‘Going Nude, Eh? Nail Colour, $9.50
3. Rescue Beauty Lounge ‘Sheer Nude’ Nail Polish, $18
4. RGB in ‘F2′, $16
5. GINGER + LIZ ‘Skin Tight’ Nail Polish, $12
6. MAC Me Over! ‘Xee & Sharon’ Nail Lacquer, $15

Dior Brings Back Monroe, Dietrich and Kelly

0 / September 8, 2011 9:00 am

Dior has temporarily forgotten all of the drama and has brought us back to the magic of the brand. Dior released its newest commercial for J’adore Dior with their beloved Charlize Theron and some old beloved girls as well. As you watch the video you will see Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich, and Marilyn Monroe all prepping to walk the catwalk.

The commercial is Theron rushing in to walk the Dior runway in Versailles‘ stunning Hall of Mirrors. Upon her entrance backstage, Theron casually acknowledges and greets the late starlets right before throwing on a slinky gold dress and strutting her stuff.

The starlets were put into this commercial using CGI magic and once you watch it, you will feel the magic.

Beauty: All About The Nudes, My 6 Favorite Eyeshadow Palettes

0 / August 22, 2011 9:00 am

When it comes to eyeshadows, when are we ever really satisfied with just one color? I know I can never decide and want options, so that’s why I love eyeshadow palettes. There are many customized creations that can be made and your eye routine never gets boring using palettes. However, with so many options and so many brands, how do you decide on the perfect palette? Shadows with natural colors are a good start. That’s why I have highlighted some of my favorite palettes that will work with anyone’s beauty routine.

Bobbi Brown ‘Shadow Options’ Eye Palette
Nobody does natural eye shadows better than Bobbi Brown. I totally adore her natural, pigment rich colors which can be worn both day and night. That’s why I love her new ‘Shadow Options’ Eye Palette  with 8 gorgeous colors. At the bottom of the palette there are 4 beautiful metallic, sparkly shades that can be worn alone or layered to make beautiful intense shades for evening drama. For daytime, wear the shadows on the top row for a more natural look. Amp it up if needed with the inserted shadow liner.

Josie Maran Argan Beautiful Eyes Palette
If you are into treatment products Josie Maran has you covered. Using her most popular ingredient, Argan oil, she has infused it into beautiful shadows. Argan Beautiful Eyes features four eye shadows and one shadow liner that coordinates for the ultimate in customized looks. Not only do they contain Argan Oil, but the palette smells wonderful with floral and fruit extracts that gives the shadows a very rich, iridescent, matte and satin finish.

Stila ‘In the Light’ Eye Shadow Palette
I absolutely adore Stila eye shadows. They have to be some of the most pigmented shadows I have ever tried. You too can try some of these phenomenal shadows in some of Stila’s best selling, award-winning, shadows like Kitten, Bare, and Gilded Gold. This palette can be worn by any skin tone, and used wet or dry. For an added bonus the palette also includes an exclusive Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Damsel (a matte chocolate brown).
