Well Suited

Lauren Dimet

My mother has told me (like a broken record) ever since I can remember, “wear an expensive suit. Mind you, it took me until just a few years ago to listen to that sage advice. I know I am not the only woman who has purchased a trendy suit on sale to have it last one, maybe two seasons. Additionally, nothing looks worse than a cheap suit when you are trying to make an impression. It continually amazes me how many women sell themselves short by the image they project.

My mother did not grow up wealthy, but her father made sure that his children and wife were dressed impeccably. Therefore, they might not have had 25 different sweaters like their friends, but they had 3 cashmere sweaters apiece. This is where the quality versus quantity lesson comes in.

I have some very expensive pant suits that I hate to admit, I have been wearing for at least 10 years. True, some of the pants are pleated and therefore a little dated, but I know they will come back at the current rate of fashion recycling… in about 3 years. So I buy new, flat-front pants to wear with my Armani jackets. The point is, if you buy a great fitting, well made and less detailed suit in a classic cut… you may find you will wear it out.

The trick is to spend less and have a little more fun on the rest of your outfit. You blew must of your budget on the suit, so try that trendy top you spotted at H & M or those red shoes you found on Zappos for $65.00 (if you order by midnight). Nobody will be the wiser because they will really be noticing the new fab suits you keep wearing.
