HAUTE HISTORIAN

Something Old, Something Prude, Something Bowed, Something Hued

Gabbie Perez

Where did the summer go? Actually, who cares because fall — the king of all fashion seasons — has arrived! I always bust out my fall wardrobe the day after Labor Day, despite what temperature the thermometer reads. Here are some of the coolest trends of the season…

Something Old
Feed that Fitzgerald heroine in you and get into something flapper-inspired. That extra bit of playful fringe adds to any outfit (plus it’s really fun to move in!) and the glitz of the sequins are sure to make you shine.

Runway
1. Monique Lhuillier Fall 2008

2. Foley + Corinna Beaded Fringe Dress $495 at ShopBop
3. Haute Hippie sequin tunic $625 at Nordstrom

Something Prude
I never thought fashion designers would look towards June Cleaver’s closet for inspiration… but I have to admit that the ‘neo-conservative’ look is fabulous for the fall. Think kitten heels, a-line skirts, and pale pastels. These looks are definitely Michelle Obama approved!

Runway
4. Peter Som Fall 2008
Real Life
5. Diane von Furstenberg Jovanna Knit Dress $365 at Saks Fifth Avenue
6. Michelle Obama Campaigning in June

Something Bowed
Perhaps my most favorite decorative accent is back for the fall (although it never really left). So feminine, so sophisticated, so cool — and it instantly pulls together any outfit. Forget necklaces, use a bow to accent your glowing face.

Runway
7. Proenza Schouler Fall 2008
Real Life
8. Mint Jodi Arnold Zelda Bow Top $297 at ShopBop
9. Betsey Johnson Rally Pumps $150 at Zappos

Something Hued
In the season where saturated colors usually hibernate until the spring, bold colors remain supreme this season (thank goodness!). Ditch your banal LBD this fall for a fun colored frock. Don’t want to invest in anything else colored? Reuse your spring and summer brights into the fall, but be sure that their fabrics suit the elements (ie - beware of linen and cotton).

Runway
10. 3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2008
Real Life
11. Alberta Ferretti Metallic Bea Embroidered Dress $1695 at Netaporter
