Minidresses were always comfortable, mod and of-the-moment, but never were they worn for big events! Until now! Recently, celebs have been forgoing cumbersome ball gowns and long, sleek frocks for sexy stilettos and short little numbers.
Nowhere was this more evident then two of the most stylish events so far this year — The MTV Movie Awards and The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala where celebs made statements with bold colors, short hems, shiny metallics and trendy shoes.
Let’s take a look at how celebs are rockin' those stylish, glam minis — and how you can try a few of your own.
Shine On
Anne Hathaway puffed up her hair, threw on a shiny, purple Marc Jacobs frock and she was the star of the show! At the Met Costume Institute Gala, we also saw lots of celebs take on the recent space age chic futuristic trend with sparkly, bright colors and lavish patents. Gisele Bundchen choose a dark blue dress that was anything but monotone with its sequins and shine. And Emma Roberts made sure everyone was watching when she sashayed in with a short red frock glistening with shine and a slightly voluminous bottom.
Shimmer always says statement, especially with florals and Elie Tahari.

Fluff It Up
Not everyone loved Lauren Conrad’s dark makeup and strange velvet dress at the MTV Movie Awards, but it certainly got people talking. What she did do right is she took on a trend that’s been showing up on runways and at the big events, and that’s the fluffed up look. Other “poofy” winners: Jessica Alba in her two tone blue Jason Wu dress at the Costume Institute Gala with the jewel-encrusted top and blue ball gown bottom. And of course, Taraji P. Henson’s gorgeous black and white art-design dress with the poofy feathered hem.

Make a Statement with Shoes
Here’s the thing. If you’re going to do a minidress, you’re not just going to want the dress to speak for itself. It’s already so short that its difficult to have so much going on at once. That’s why it’s a good idea to make a statement with shoes. With all the ankle boots, oxfords, peep toes, and gladiator sandals on the streets, it’s easy to make your look more mod with the right kind of shoes to add just enough oomph to an ensemble. Ashley Tisdale wore a patent off-blue dress with a belt to the MTV Movie Awards. While the dress was nice, it was the shoes that took our breath away. Again, Lauren Conrad’s dress wasn’t the best, but her butterfly shoes were crisp and creative.
If you want hefty shoes, you’ll have to pay the price. Let Balmain do the talking.

Traditional gowns are so formal. The cool thing about minidresses are that they’re so mod that you can make a sharp statement with the right show of skin, interesting pleats, far-fetched accessories, or even a logo. Helena Christensen was in vogue when she played out the hit fashion term in silver on her otherwise boring pink mini. Leighton Meester had some sexy drapings on her MTV Movie Awards and va-va-voomed it with some sheer spots on her backside. Madonna, always one to get us gasping, wore thigh high boots and placed a bird on her head. And then there was Twilight’s Kristen Stewart, who decided to forgo dressy for an “I don’t care” casual and replaced sexy stilettos with a pair of Converse All-Stars.
