Bottoms Up!

Jenn Scott

One of the most exciting parts of piecing together looks is mixing and matching. Not only does it help to diversify your wardrobe, it’s a whole lot of fun to get creative! Sometimes creating combinations can be an overwhelming task, but the easiest way to go about is to start with great pieces.

This season the trends tend to be a bit bottom heavy...in a good way! Shoes have had their turn, refined, structured dresses have been in the spotlight, and now it’s time to showcase the part of your wardrobe that often gets overlooked.

When looking to make a statement, the easiest route is usually shoes or accessories. This summer, think outside the box a little and build your outfit around your bottom wear.

With many options to choose from, it won’t be hard to find something you love. Since it is so hot outside, think about the classic mini with a twist. Sequins are a sure way to shine at your fabulous summer cocktail party. Vena Cava has created a covetable mini that rocks. If that’s not in your budget, check out the stylish and sleek sequin mini that bebe has rolled out. It’s just as sassy chic and quite a bit more affordable.

Keeping with the trend of short and cool, sometimes all you can bear to wear in the heat is a pair of shorts. If you are a fan of retro fashion, then you will be very excited about the return of shorts. Cute and bold, this summer trend is a look that you won’t be able to ignore. Be brave and show off those legs you’ve been working so hard on! If you are looking to make an even bigger statement in your hot pants, get a color that’s bright and fun, like the cobalt blue at Isabel Marant. Charlotte Russe came up with a very similar look that you can grab for a song.

A trend that’s found its way unexpectedly to the runway is harem pants, such as this pair by Ralph Lauren. Surprisingly chic, this look can add a whole lot of pizazz to your summer wardrobe. Pair this look with a fitted top, belt, and your favorite summer sandals. The harem pant can be both dressy or casual and are perfect for summer parties, a day of shopping or a trip to the beach. Recreate this look for less by Splendid!

Last, but most certainly not least, always add a classic piece to your wardrobe, with a Chanel influence. A light pleated summer skirt will will always be the picture of sophistication and class like this one from J. Crew. Choose the length and fit that best suits you and your look.
