Boots On The Brain

Andra Naylor

The changing season has me thinking about one thing, and one thing only - boots. Tall boots, ankle boots, red boots, blue boots. And it's not just me; co-workers and friends alike have been hunting down the best over-the-knee boot or debating the pros and cons of the classic cowboy style. So if you're boot-crazy like me, read on, and get excited for a new pair!

Recently, an Urban Outfitters email landed in my inbox, featuring this delightful Dolce Vita Leather Over The Knee Boot. This pair is dramatic, yet casual and the leather has a lovely pebbled texture. According to the reviews, the boots can fit slightly slouchy if your legs are slender, but there is a smart strip of elastic that's hidden in the back, and keeps the boots upright, without being stiff. $198 at urbanoutfitters.

As a more affordable option, check out piperlime.com, which has a healthy selection of boots under $100. The Enzo Angiolini Zoot, a black leather tall boot with round toe and double zipper, is a classic style for $99. This boot is versatile and its cushioned leather footbed and 1/2" heel sounds like you would be comfortable in them all day. On zappos.com, the Zoot is also available in black patent and brown suede.

If you're looking for the perfect bootie (Rachel Zoe calls them "shooties") for this season, view Shopbop's collection, which is so extensive it's hard to buy just one pair. I'm torn between the Belle by Sigerson Morrison stacked heel ankle bootie in bamboo ($345) and the Moschino Cheap and Chic High Heel Platform Suede pair ($595), or if you want to splurge, why not go for the zipper booties by Giuseppe Zanotti for Balmain ($1,495)?

Or if equestrian is your style, a two-toned riding boot is a classic and Seychelles is a dependable brand. The "Orchestra" boot features a full-length side zip, which makes it easy to pull them on, and a 1" stacked heel for a little height ($169.95 at nordstrom.com). Also online at Nordstrom, the Star Ling "Plum" Boot is a stylish knee-high with curved piped seams ($149.95 at nordstrom.com). The gray base with black seams would contrast perfectly with opaque black tights and a pencil skirt.

To conclude, I think there are some things that you need in life, purely because they make a statement. That's the case with me and a pair of Donald J. Pliners, particularly the VVV boot ($449 at endless.com). This sueded leather design in saddle is a bit stretchy with a sexy spiked heel and features a bold embossing at the top. I don't need this boot; in fact I already have a pair of brown boots, but I just can't stop thinking about them. I guess that's just the power of the boot!
