How to Pair Holiday Chic With Your Holiday Cheer

Dear Bean:

I was just invited to my first holiday party of the season, and all I have to show for holiday attire is an old red sweater with a cheesy reindeer on it. I want to find something holiday-themed to wear that is classy and isn’t strictly “holiday”, and definitely isn’t cheesy. Can you help?

Signed,
Hopeless for the Holidays

Dear Hopeless,

Your email reminded me the scene in the film Bridget Jones Diary when Colin Firth’s character, Mark Darcy, was ridiculed for wearing a not-so-stylish Christmas jumper to a holiday party. I definitely want to spare you from the same type of ridicule this holiday season!

But have some holiday cheer! You can look sleek and stylish for the holidays without succumbing to an embarrassing fate. And what’s best is that you can wear items that don’t have to be restricted for holiday-wear only. Yes we all know that holiday colors are red and green, but what about white? The holidays have snow don’t they? There’s nothing like making a statement at your holiday party with a white satin dress and dark hose to bring out all types of Christmas cheer!

I also think that no matter what you wear, you can make it “holiday” by adding just a bit of sparkle. Sport a sequined bolero, accent your top with a glittery skirt or even add a black sequined hair pin or head band to make a statement.

And finally, what are the holidays without the jewelry? This is the perfect time of year to bring out the pearls and diamonds – you can even say they symbolize the snow and stars. Whatever your reasoning, they will look gorgeous reflecting the light from this year’s burning Yule log.
